Welcome, Emily Ray!

We are so excited to welcome Emily Ray, a dietetic intern with Mississippi State University, to Growing Healthy Waves! Emily has been with us since Monday, and honestly… I never want her to leave! thankfully, she’ll be here for another week of learning, fun, and making a difference with our students Tupelo Public School District.

Emily has already brought so much excitement to our students by sharing her nutrition knowledge, including lessons about calories, while also empowering students with hands-on learning in their garden area and aqueduct designs.

In this photo, Emily is helping our students “guess” what food they are during our “Getting To The Source” lesson.

And the fun doesn’t stop there! Beyond the classroom, Emily has been busy preparing a taste test for our students. 👀

Yesterday, Ms. Stanfield’s 4th graders raced to design, build, and execute their very own aqueducts!

At the beginning of class, students were presented with a real-world dilemma: How can we get enough water to our garden beds at this time of the season?

We first explored how ancient miners and Roman’s transported water, then students were divided into teams and challenged to put their ideas to the test.

Blooming Where We Are Planted!

Our high school garden team experienced transformation in a beautiful way last Thursday- both through words and through the work of their hands.

Students reflected on the idea of “blooming where we are planted” by writing their own poems about growth, resilience and becoming who they are meant to be. Then, they put that message into action as they weeded one of our raised garden beds, clearing away what was not longer needed and making room for new plant starts to take root and BLOOM!

Ms. Chapman’s 3rd graders at Rankin Elementary School had a blast playing a guessing game of “What Food Am I?” Students were assigned a food and had to use yes-or-no questions to discover what food they were.

Once everyone solved their food mystery, we took our learning a step further! Students discussed the difference between whole foods and processed foods, then worked together to sequence different food sets from their original whole-food form to minimally processed and highly processed foods.

This lesson is always a favorite, and this time was no exception! Our students had fun while learning more about where our food comes from and how it changes along the way.

Mrs. Haadsma’s challenge class was busy watering and caring for the gardens at Pierce Street Elementary School when I arrived! As students tended to the garden, they spotted a tasty snack growing right before their eyes.

Once their stewardship was finished, students were able to harvest and enjoy their garden-grown treat!
