We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our co-founder, director and teacher, Mrs. Ruth Slocum. She touched countless lives throughout her career, and loved her Sonshine Nursery School family dearly. The light of Jesus shone through her, and her passion for sharing His love was a blessing to all who knew her.

“Ruth Slocum, 74, of Tunkhannock passed away at her home surrounded by her family on May 29th, 2022. She was born in Wilkes-Barre on Dec. 29, 1947, and she was the daughter of the late Marlot Sick, and the late former Elva Jennings. She married Edmund Slocum on June 20, 1970.
Ruth graduated from Tunkhannock High School Class of 1965 and Bloomsburg University Class of 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She was an elementary teacher for Tunkhannock Area for seven years. She then co-founded and worked at Sonshine Nursery School until the spring of 2020. Her true passion was teaching children the love of Jesus. In addition, Ruth enjoyed motorcycle riding, gardening, walking, and leading Bible studies. She especially loved to be surrounded by her family and cherished each moment with them.
In addition to her husband, Ruth is survived by; a brother Lloyd Sick and wife Carolyn, daughters Amy Mucheck and husband Chad, Sara Ergott and husband Jesse, grandchildren Tyler and Carli Mucheck, and Emma and Ethan Ergott.
Funeral service will be held Friday, June 3rd, at 10:30AM from the Community Bible Church 327 State Route 92 S, Tunkhannock, PA. A viewing will be held at the church Thursday, June 2nd, from 4-6PM. Interment will be at the Sunnyside Cemetery. The remaining contents of the school will be put out on the curb on Sunday morning for the Tunkhannock Borough Spring Cleanup. Drive by, take a look and help yourself to anything you might want!

We have about 20 boxes of books, quite a few puzzles, some toys etc. We’d like to give away as much as possible before what’s left goes out to the curb for the Tunkhannock Borough Spring Cleanup next Monday. To our families looking for a Christian preschool option in the area, Summit Christian Academy, near Clarks Summit, has reached out and let us know they have openings in their preschool for the Fall.

SCA offers a preschool program for 3 and 4-year-olds, five, three or two days each week with half day or full day options.

Sonshine Nursery School has been a labor of love and a true passion for us. We put our hearts and souls into creating a school environment where we could share God’s love in an educational and nurturing way. We cherished the time spent with all of our children and families. We looked forward to each day at Sonshine, and we never stopped learning or having fun.

We were always blessed with a wonderful and passionate staff, and we appreciate all who worked with us over the years. It is especially sad for us to say goodbye to our current team of Mrs. Dana Steffy, Mrs. Kate Miller and Mrs. Michelle Brace. We love you and can’t thank you enough!

The decision to close was not taken lightly, and all involved prayerfully considered every option. We are so sad to see it ending, but we feel blessed beyond measure for the opportunity we had to teach little minds, to give our love and, most importantly, to share His light with our little corner of the world!

We are eternally grateful to the Tunkhannock Presbyterian Church and our wonderful community of Tunkhannock. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to each and every person who passed through Sonshine’s doors over the past 36 years. We love you all!

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you the Sonshine Nursery School Board of Directors and the Tunkhannock Presbyterian Church have decided to close Sonshine Nursery School. Due to the current health situation of the corona virus and circumstances beyond our control, the school will be closed permanently. We love our Sonshine families and are truly grateful for our times together. We wish you the best and pray you are blessed, safe and well. Always remember that God loves you and so do we!
