Earlier this week, students in Mr. Stussy's Natural Resources & Ecology classes took a walk on the wild side at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.

Armed with binoculars and their field journals, students engaged in observation and recorded what they saw at the refuge. Big thanks to the refuge staff and volunteers for hosting us, and for being amazing teachers and guides on this experience!

This was an incredible opportunity to practice their observation and field journaling skills, as well as take in the natural beauty. What a fantastic day!

ICYMI, TMS teacher Mrs. Hensold's Art classes (which are CTE!) are displaying work in downtown Olympia!

In this six-week project, granted by Olympia Artspace Alliance/, students planned and implemented the collaborative installation based off the theme, “hibernation.”

Students created “dwellings” individually or in pairs, practicing a variety of three-dimensional art skills, including cardboard furniture construction, wire work, paper mache and modeling clay sculpture. Then they broke into teams to take on other aspects of the project, including painting a 24-foot background mural, and constructing tree and waterfall sculptures, each containing numerous 2-D and 3-D components.

This amazing collaborative project highlights relationships between applied and fine arts, including studies for the project in various artistic media, interior and landscape design, and public and commissioned works.

You can view the instillation in the Capital Street window of the Goldberg Building (4th and Capital, downtown Olympia) until March 15th.

Back in November, Mr. Stussy's Natural Resources & Ecology classes visited Kennedy Creek to observe chum salmon spawning.

Salmon Spawning is a critical process for our local environment, economy, and is deeply rooted in the PNW Native American tribal community and culture. It was an amazing opportunity for students to see spawning salmon in their native habitat has a unique advantage over just reading or discussing it in the classroom.

This time of year chum salmon return to span in 2.5 miles of freshwater at Kennedy Creek Natural Area. After spawning, the salmon carcasses provide important marine derived nutrients to the local ecosystem, sustaining the health of the plants and animals. The nutrients from the thousands of carcasses supplement the diets of newly emerged chum fry along with more than 60 different species of wildlife, including the northern river otter, red-tailed hawk and bobcat. Invertebrates living in the intertidal muck consume the carcasses that wash down the creek, after which they are, in turn, consumed by shorebirds.

Getting outdoors and using all 5 senses (decaying salmon have quite the odor) has a lasting positive impact on students. Its quite the opportunity for the students to see this PNW keystone species right in their own ‘backyard’.

Thank you Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group for your partnership in this amazing FIELD STEM experience!
