We learn best when we are together. That is why WASA created Learning Leaders Lab, a yearlong learning experience for district instructional leaders in Washington State. Small group collectives will meet seven times through out the school year, focusing on the problems that come up from asking this question:

What leadership practices help district leaders move beyond managing instructional programs to leading coherent systems that improve student learning?

The first session, an In-Person Workshop in Renton, takes place on September 16.

In this week’s Turn2, we hear from Rebecca Miner, Superintendent of Edmonds School District, who reflects on her journey in educational leadership and an important lesson she learned early in her central office career: success can look different when your role changes.

Rebecca encourages leaders new to central office to use those first months to reflect, learn, and thoughtfully define what success looks like in their new position.

WASA is excited to extend the application window for the eastern Washington cohort of Facilitating for Impact — an initiative designed to strengthen leadership confidence, collaboration, and connection across Washington’s education community.

Facilitating for Impact will bring together 50 WASA members on the Eastside and 50 on the Westside for a focused journey that increases leadership capacity for uniting people around a shared purpose and facilitating leadership collectives that inspire action and foster belonging.

There is no fee to participate and a one-night hotel accommodation will be provided by WASA for the night of September 17 in Spokane for participants if their school district office is more than 50 miles from ESD 101.

🎉 Please join us in congratulating Dr. James Everett, superintendent of Anacortes School District, on being elected WASA President-elect for 2026–27!

A WASA member since 2013, James has served our association in numerous leadership roles and has demonstrated a deep commitment to connecting and supporting education leaders across Washington.

“I want WASA to continue being a place where leaders feel connected, supported and valued and where we use our collective voice and experiences to make public education stronger,” James said.

James will assume the WASA presidency in July 2027. We look forward to his leadership and service to WASA members, students, and communities across our state.
