Did you register for Creativity 2020 yet?! -
Did you register for Creativity 2020 yet?! This sentence was spoken between workshop sessions at a UMC Children's Workers Conference where my husband, Bob Pierson, and Jennifer were collaborating. Where do you get your best ideas? Do you go somewhere kick your creativity into high gear?
One of the most important elements of leadership in the church today is the ability to think outside the box. While our internal drive is and always will be to care for the hurting and bring the life-giving Gospel of Christ to the world around us - our ability to think outside the box and consider new ways to connect with people is crucial when it comes to accomplishing this drive.
Yet sometimes, finding the space to brainstorm, get creative and think outside the box can be hard. So here are a few ideas from my own experience to help you get creative:
1) TAKE A DRIVE - Sometimes just a change of scenery can help you clear your head and think. Drive through a part of town you don’t normally go through, drive out into the country, drive through a neighborhood of beautiful old homes. Some of my best sermons were written while on a drive through the rural countryside. Here in Tulsa we have one of the largest collection of well preserved art deco homes and commercial buildings. One of my favorite things to do for inspiration is to drive through those neighborhoods and admire the architectural masterpieces.
2) TAKE A NAP - Often after I’ve several hours plugging away at my desk, my brain is exhausted and needs to rest. So, I take a nap. Not a long one but a short 20-30 minute one. It’s a scientific fact that our brains regenerate by creating new neural pathways while we sleep. As a result, we wake refreshed and ready to tackle tasks with a new perspective.
3) PLAY ANGRY BIRDS (OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT) - I love Angry Birds Blast. It’s a fun puzzle, strategy game that gives my mind space to relax and tackle a solvable problem for a while. When I feel I need a break or the space to think outside the box, I’ll pick up my phone and play a few rounds. With part of my brain engaged in the game, the rest takes a break and when I get back to things I feel more inspired.
4) GO ON A WALK - Physical activity benefits our brain by improving blood flow thus strengthening memory and stimulates the chemical changes in our brains that enhance learning, mood and thinking. Plus it’s just great for our overall health. Also, like taking a drive, the change of scenery helps us gain perspective and the deep breathing helps to keep us awake.
So, those are just a few things I do and places I go to get new ideas. What do you do?
Hey Leadership Nexus Community!
This is Rev. Becky Pierson, Executive Director of Leadership Nexus. It’s been a minute since we posted anything - sorry about that! It seems my days and weeks get away from me with some many other ministry activities that I forget to post on our FB page. So, I’m hoping to change that over these next few weeks. It’s too far into Lent to say it’s my Lenten discipline, but perhaps I should make it something like that.
Speaking of Lent - how is your season of preparation going? Where have you seen fruit from Lent’s journey within your congregation? within yourself? Where is your congregation struggling? what about you, where are you struggling? Where has creativity thinking sprung up within you and/or your congregation? How have you fostered creative spiritual, emotional and organizational formation?
Just some thoughts to get you thinking. Know my heart is always with you and praying for all our Leadership Nexus community and beyond. We share this journey together - no matter our geography, denomination or congregational structure - we are all in this together.
Grace and peace,
Becky
