Students don’t just need some reading practice. They need a LOT of successful reading.
That word “successful” is the key. That means reading that feels doable, builds confidence, and keeps them wanting more. There’s a real difference between a child working through a book that fits them and one who’s struggling through something too hard. One builds a reader. The other builds frustration.
Finding the right level matters just as much as finding the right book.

Let’s bust some dyslexia myths. 💜
So many parents come to us after years of being told their child is “just not trying hard enough” or they “just don’t want to read.”It breaks our hearts every time.
Dyslexia is a neurological difference. It has nothing to do with intelligence, effort, or vision. And you don’t need a formal diagnosis to get your child support.
Save this post and share it with someone who needs to hear it.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Lavender’s Bleu! 🍀
Did you know that kids who read just 20 minutes a day are exposed to nearly 1.8 million words a year? Whether your reader is just starting out, working to level up, or a born bookworm, every page they turn is a step toward a pot of gold!

Snowed in?
It’s the perfect time to cozy up with a good book and read together!
Reading aloud:
• Builds vocabulary
• Improves comprehension
• Strengthens parent-child connection
Even 15 minutes makes a difference!
Reading together, even briefly, supports vocabulary growth, listening comprehension, and confidence. It also creates positive associations with books that last far beyond childhood.
All you need is a book, a cozy spot, and a few uninterrupted minutes.

"Effective literacy instruction is not a checklist or a miracle."
Rather, experts agree, teachers need to be trained in brain research and literacy, given tools to succeed, and autonomy and flexibility to use those tools and tailor their teaching to each student.
But what exactly does research say about the science of reading?
In our January issue, Betty Casey interviews three experts in the field - educator Jami Jackson-Cole; Dr. Mindy Smith, founder of Lavender's Bleu Literacy Market; and neuroscientist/reading specialist Maryanne Wolf - to learn more.

In the January issue of TulsaKids, our own Dr. Mindy shares how the Science of Reading combines systematic decoding with meaningful literature to help struggling readers make real progress.
This feature breaks down what brain research actually tells us about how children learn to read, and why instruction matters.
