Celebrating and working together to create a better future with an abundant ocean. π From classroom lectures to open-ocean fieldwork, UTulsa marine biology students just wrapped up an unforgettable week at the MarineLab Environmental Education Center in Florida! They dove headfirst into everything from seagrass ecology surveys and advanced coral restoration workshops to late-night labs tracking microplastics and phytoplankton.
There's no better way to study the ocean than trading the traditional desk for snorkeling and scuba diving in a living, breathing marine classroom!

Focusing on brain health. π§ At UTulsa, researchers are making strides to understand the chemical causes of certain neurological disorders and how to care for people with dementia.
Assistant Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry Pradeep Kurup integrates biochemical, cellular and genetic approaches to uncover mechanisms that can guide new strategies for preventing and treating neurodegenerative disorders and neuropsychiatric illnesses, such as seizures and cognitive deficit disorders.
Meanwhile, Assistant Professor of Nursing Bill Buron has been advancing how we understand and deliver care to individuals living with dementia, particularly those in the later stages of the disease.

Need a summer read? ποΈ Consider revisiting this classic: Distinguished Alumna S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders is on the Brooklyn Public Library's list of 250 most influential books in United States History. The book was nominated by honorary Tulsan Ethan Hawke, who wrote:
S. E. Hintonβs The Outsiders is a kind of literary miracle. Written when she was 16 years old, the book possesses a rare and extraordinary power to speak so clearly and directly to young people that readers fall not simply in love with the novel but with the bliss of reading. For 60 years now, The Outsiders has been a gateway drug to the high and wisdom that literature has to offer. The story dives into the painful truths of poverty, class, and anger that rest as a bedrock of growing up as an American. Iβve read the novel at 14, 33, and 50. It gets better every time. βStay gold, Ponyboy.β
Add it to your summer reading list and check out a copy from McFarlin Library!

Celebrating Matthew Hindman, associate professor of Political Science and recipient of UTulsa's Outstanding Teacher Award.
Marking more than a decade of undergraduate instruction, Hindman began teaching political science at UTulsa in 2013, shortly after receiving his doctorate from the University of Minnesota. He was promoted to associate professor in 2019.
In his classroom, Hindmanβs students deepen their βawareness of American democracy and the enduring connections between its past and present.β With a student-centred approach, he prioritizes a βparticipatory spirit.β He aims to teach students that learning must be completed with others βwho might not share our values, backgrounds or ambitions.β He seeks to create an environment where students try new ideas, think aloud and reflect collaboratively.
Here's what his students have to say about him:
