My daughter and I came across two hidden treasures in Tulsa this past weekend! We found two African markets - Ndaya Afro Tropical Market (aka ofTulsa) located at 71st & Memorial and Heritage Afro Tropical Market located between 61st & 71st on Lewis.

These are the first African markets we have come across in our area so we were so excited to find them! They were full of favorite items we had in Uganda including hair & skin products, rice, beans, plantains, European cookies (Uganda used to be ruled by Great Britain), fish, collard greens, and my kid's favorite drink, Orange Fanta!

✨ NEW ARRIVALS from Uganda ✨

Y’all… look at these incredible handcrafted pieces that just came in! 🇺🇬❤️

These unique wire motorcycles and vehicles are made entirely by hand using simple materials—yet the creativity and detail are absolutely amazing. From the carefully twisted wire frames to the hand-shaped wheels, each piece tells a story of skill, ingenuity, and artistry.

One of the things I love most is how resourceful these artists are. Using what they have available, they create not only beautiful décor pieces, but also toys and practical items for their homes and families. It’s a powerful reminder that creativity doesn’t require fancy tools—just heart, talent, and determination. 💛

I never expected that adopting our son in Uganda would lead to a friendship and a mission that would change both of our lives.

In 2013 our family lived temporarily in Uganda during the adoption process for our son, Asher. While we were there, I met Harriet, who was the chef at the guesthouse where we stayed. We quickly became friends, and even after we returned home, we stayed in touch over the years.

During that time in Uganda, I began to see how difficult it can be for many mothers to provide for their children. Too often, children end up in orphanages simply because families lack financial opportunities. That experience planted a seed in my heart.

Today, Harriet and I work together to help create opportunities for women in her community. Harriet makes many of the beautiful bags and beads you see here, and she also purchases handmade items from other women in her area so they can earn income to support their families.

The items are then shipped to me here in Oklahoma, where I sell them locally and share them with all of you.

You can also find Uganda Bags and Beads at my booth inside Hummingbird Fine Craft, Inc. in Tulsa’s Pearl District.
