We finished our All About Me Body Biography Projects just in time for Open House, and the parents were absolutely blown away by their children’s work.

But the best part wasn’t the finished projects—it was what happened while they were creating them. 💜

One student told me he couldn’t draw himself. Without hesitation, a girl who had been in school with him the entire previous year said, “I’ll draw you!” She created his entire portrait and outfit, making him look amazing. When she finished, he smiled and said, “I didn’t even know you were an artist.”

All he had to do was add the facts about himself, and suddenly he was proud of his work and genuinely excited about the project.

This is a student who has struggled in the past with friendships and completing assignments. Watching him experience success because someone else shared their strength was a beautiful reminder of what classrooms are really about.

One student leaned on another where he felt weak. Another discovered she had a talent that could lift someone else up. Both walked away with a new friendship.

❤️ That’s the real lesson.

It’s all about connection.

Sometimes the most meaningful learning isn’t what we planned—it happens when students 🫶 choose kindness, collaboration, and encouragement.

If you haven’t tried a Body Biography Project, this is your sign! They’re the perfect way to build community, celebrate individuality, and create meaningful classroom connections from day one.

One of my favorite parts of teaching literature is watching students transform 🗣️ their understanding into something meaningful and creative.

This Johnny Cade Body Biography Project goes far beyond a traditional character worksheet—students support their thinking with text evidence, analyze character traits, explore symbolism, and make deep connections to the novel.

When students create, they remember. 🧠

Whether you’re teaching The Outsiders for the first time or looking to refresh your novel study, Body Biographies turn literary analysis into an engaging, standards-based project your students will be proud to display.

Who’s your students’ favorite Outsiders character—Johnny, Ponyboy, Dally, or Soda? Let me know below! ⬇️

☀️Summer is the perfect time to rethink the way we teach our favorite novels.

A Body Biography Project 🗣️ transforms character analysis into something students actually want to do. Instead of filling out another worksheet, students gather evidence, 📖 analyze character development, make text connections, and creatively showcase their understanding—all in one meaningful project.

Johnny Cade 🕶️ is one of those characters students never forget, and watching them bring his story to life through quotes, symbols, themes, and personal connections always leads to richer discussions using, The Outsiders.

If you’re planning your ELA curriculum this summer, consider adding a Body Biography Project to your next novel study. It’s a student favorite for a reason. ❤️
