Some of the most powerful work happening inside Kendall-Whittier's schools is done by community members who show up. This includes, and is not limited to, parents, neighbors, and others stepping into the classroom as partners in their success.
In this short interview, Susan Mulvaney shared how the Family Mentor program is quietly changing outcomes for students across our schools.
"She was really nervous at first, not confident at all. And every week, she gained a little more confidence... until she stopped waiting to be told what to do, and started saying, 'What can I do? Let me help.'
That's a direct quote about one of our newest Family Mentors this year. What did she and her students accomplish together? Listen to this clip to get the full story.

Who is Growing Together's community?
Those that we serve are not recipients. They are our partners, neighbors, and leaders.
Kendall-Whittier, our community, is diverse and full of residents committed to building this community.
No matter their background, we are honored to work alongside them.
Together, we grow.
Growing Together is not a building, logo, or a program.
It's people ready to help Kendall-Whittier residents.
It's the coordinators walking alongside students and their families every single day.
It's the staff answering the phone when a neighbor calls needing help finding housing.
It's the newest member of our team, ready to bring fresh energy and vision to our Community Development work.
Every milestone in this "How We've Grown" series, every number, every story, every ounce of impact, exists because of the people behind it.
Swipe through to meet the humans who show up for Kendall-Whittier every single day.

Our mission is to eliminate the inequalities that stand in the way for families in vulnerable neighborhoods to succeed
In plain language, that looks like:
Making sure a child's zip code never determines their future.
Tutoring, mentoring, and support so every student has what they need to succeed before they fall behind.
Creating spaces, programs, and connections where neighbors know each other, trust each other, and build something together
Ensuring safe, affordable housing and quality public spaces exist so that families aren’t priced out or pushed out of the neighborhood they call home.
We use upstream interventions to address root causes. It's what actually breaks cycles instead of just managing them.

Safety looks like a properly installed car seat and a family that knows how to use it.
Huge thank you to Tulsa Educare for partnering with us on this important work!
Through Buckle Up for Life, our expert team member, Mary Grace Marshall, was proud to provide car seats and hands-on installation guidance to families at several Tulsa Educare schools.

Chapter 2 of "How We've Grown."
Neighborhoods don't transform overnight.
For decades, Kendall-Whittier carried the burden of division and disinvestment. Our business district ran low in occupancy; we were a community fighting to be seen. That was the ground Growing Together entered.
Today, that same commercial corridor now has established businesses and is still growing and developing. Over $158 million has been invested by the private sector. 550 units of quality, mixed-income housing have been built. Latino bachelor's degree attainment in our community has increased by 209%. It's all thanks to public and private investments and the hard work of multiple individuals and organizations, and the community itself taking charge of it’s future.
In 2024 alone, Growing Together has:
-Provided individualized support to 537 students
-Grew the Kendall-Whittier Neighborhood Trust to 47 rental units, preserving long-term affordability
-Surveyed nearly 400 residents to make sure our work reflects what THEY say they need
-Supported 43 local entrepreneurs through $683,400 in micro-loans and grants
This post barely scratches the surface of the work that has been put into this community and the progress that has been made.
None of this happened by accident. It happened through sustained investment, trusted relationships, and a community that refused to give up on itself.
And we are just getting started.
