Mrs. Norris 8-week Creative Writing Zine sprint officially came to an end last week, and wow — these students absolutely poured themselves into their work. Over the past two months, they stepped into the roles of writers, illustrators, designers, and publishers to create their own original zines (mini self-published magazines), and the creativity they brought to the table was incredible.
We challenged them with some pretty big creative risks and structural hurdles, and they responded with projects that were thoughtful, hilarious, imaginative, and completely their own. We saw:
➡ambitious sci-fi stories built around classic Hero’s Journey archetypes
➡ funny “Dog Man”-inspired comics dedicated to older siblings
➡mixed-media collage zines exploring school dress codes
➡and even a fully functioning toaster oven instruction manual for the technical schematic challenge
But the favorite part wasn’t just the finished projects, it was hearing students reflect on what they learned along the way. So many of them talked about learning to manage their time, stick with a long-term project, and trust their own ideas and creative instincts. It was a joy to watch our students grow in confidence while genuinely enjoying the process.
