Claude Monet is remembered today as the father of Impressionism, a man whose brush captured the fleeting dance of light across lily ponds and haystacks. Yet, behind those serene canvases lived a volatile perfectionist who famously destroyed over fifty of his own works. When the sunlight on his canvas failed to match the shimmering truth in his mind, Monet would reach for a sharp object to slash the fabric or toss the painting directly into his fireplace.

This was not a casual act of frustration. It was a brutal rejection of anything he deemed inadequate. He spent his final years obsessed with capturing the exact atmosphere of Giverny, often working on several versions of the same subject simultaneously to chase a singular, elusive effect. If a stroke felt dishonest or a colour failed to vibrate with the energy of the natural world, the painting was destroyed by his hand.

It is unsettling to imagine the masterpieces lost to those moments of fury. We tend to view art history as a steady climb toward perfection, but Monet reminds us that brilliance is often forged in the fires of dissatisfaction. His scorched canvases were not failures, but the physical price of his relentless pursuit of beauty.
