Empowering students to become agents of change in their communities through science, peace education and gardening.

"Every day he's come home and told us something new he's learned." 🌱

The garden always sends students home with something — a question, a discovery, a handful of herbs, a reason to talk about their day.

Meet Theresa Grewe — one of the wonderful volunteers who has become a trusted part of the Greenwood Leadership Academy After School program. 🌱

Theresa found Global Gardens at a United Way event in 2025 and, by her own account, felt immediately like an opportunity had landed in her lap. A clinical scientist with a love of gardening and a background in adult literacy tutoring, she brought exactly the kind of curiosity and care Global Gardens thrives on. The first time she connected with GLA Garden Educator Madison, she kept saying "I can't wait to jump in and get started!" — and she really meant it.

Madison adds: “She quickly became a trusted adult to the students she works with, always ready with a fun fact, happy to get her hands in the soil, and intentional about building genuine relationships.” She's even raising milkweed at home this fall with plans to bring monarch caterpillars into the mix.

When asked what she'd tell someone considering volunteering, Theresa said, "It is very fulfilling and fun to interact with the students. I have learned a lot about gardening and plants I have not worked with before. The staff are wonderful. It's been great."

We feel the same way about you, Theresa! So glad you found us.

A wonderful time was had by all last month at our Summer Grow Society “Pickle Party.” Chef Sam of Et Al opened by sharing his story of how pickling sparked his cooking journey, and how meaningful his work with Global Gardeners has been for him. Twenty-eight guests joined in, and everyone left with three different types of pickles.

The Grow Society is an individual giving society whose members support the long-term sustainability of Global Gardens through three-year pledges. For more information about joining, please reach out!

July 18 is Nelson Mandela International Day, marked globally by a challenge to give 67 minutes of service in honor of Mandela's 67 years of public life.

The number is symbolic (and a little trendy recently), but the idea behind it is serious: that sustainable change is built by people who show up consistently, not just once.

That is something Global Gardens understands well. Our work is built on the belief that young people who learn to serve their communities — who practice patience, responsibility, and care through garden-centered education — become agents of change long after the growing season ends.

On Mandela Day and every day, we are grateful for the volunteers, educators, and community partners who give their time to make that possible.

On the last day of Global Gardens leadership camp, alumni cooked a meal for 50 volunteers made from produce harvested from the gardens: lemon swiss chard pasta, roasted beet and orange salad, and agua de jamaica.

It came at the end of a week spent in deep conversation about community, service, and what it looks like to create change. Evan Dougoud, founder of the BeHeard Movement, visited and shared how he began his advocacy work at 15. For many in the room, that was the moment things clicked.

Daniela, one of the participants, said it best: "The way he started at 15 was inspirational. You don't have to wait to be an adult to want to help. Just share what you're going through."
