High utility bill! Learn where your energy is being used. It is simple math!
Here is the information I found from my PSO account. By dividing the “Average Bill per Day” by the “Average KWHs per Day” we determined the "Average Cost per KWH per Month" for the 3 year history provided. The chart is attached.
You can find this information by going to your PSO “My Account” and clicking on “Energy Usage – View Usage”. There you will find a wealth of information on your usage and cost. Request this information from your utility provider.
Here is how we use the information!
We subtract our average KWH or cost use per day base (lowest use months usually spring and fall) from our summer month’s use per day to get an idea of the use and cost of air conditioning for that month.
As an example for July, we subtracted our base of 12 KWH/day avg. from the 52 KWH/day avg. tells me we used 40 KWH/day avg. for cooling. Divide this by the equipment label, tells me my compressor ran on average 10.6 hours out of a 24 hour period for those billing days.
Comparing this to the Cooling Degree Days provides a pattern of consumption due to the outdoor temperatures.
We changed our ac filter at least twice during July to get the greatest cool air flow during the greatest need.
Knowing how to operate your shelter is a lesson we all should be attending!

“U-R-WISE”© How to understand your shelter energy use!
It is called Cooling Degree Days (CDD) in the summer.
Understanding Relation of Weather Indexing to Save Energy© by using the "Shelter Energy Use Index”©
In simple terms, it is an indication of the 24 hour average daily temperature above a base average daily temperature of 65°F.

In other words, your cooling unit typically would not run at an outside temperature of 65°F. Any thermostat setting above 65°F would require your cooling unit to make up the temperature difference from inside to outside.

If you think of it this way; equate the CCD to equipment run time, it makes more sense! The more CCD’s, the more equipment run time.

Depending on your shelters heat gain situation, your cool unit will need to make up the temperature difference and the greater the difference the more you cooling unit will run.

Here is an example of use for Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Comparing data of the CDD of July of 2025 to July of 2026 indicates 2 trends:
The CCD’s for July have increased for each year:
2025 had 58 more CDD than the average.
2026 had 92 more CCD than the average.
2025 had 17 days above the normal.
2026 had 19 days above the normal.

The National Weather Service CDD graphs show how these months were well above the normal CDD temperature range of 18 CCD’s.

What is really unfortunate is our energy bills are sent after the higher temperatures have affected our usage.

Analyzing after the fact, one can see the increased temperatures above the average will have a direct relation with the increase in utility cost.

What consumers really need is an indication of the future potential for higher cooling or heating cost.

I proposed a similar idea back in September 17, 1991. Maybe now it will catch on.

This could simply be the Cooling or Heating Degree Days reported using a 10 day temperature forecast provided weekly.

Who will be the first weather reporter with a "Shelter Energy Use Index”?

Can you see and feel the difference? What is the long term affect and value?

Solar photovoltaic panels are oriented to maximize the energy produced from the sun to produce electricity to solve the problem we created! Look how the panels are all facing the same southerly direction creating maximum energy by simple “passive” orientation.

Look closely at the photos of a “typical” subdivision development. Can you pick out any shelters that are actually oriented to maximize the natural “passive” energy from the sun, like the solar panels? There are a few!

Ironic isn’t it! We utilize proper orientation to create electrical energy to power heating and cooling systems to correct the poor orientation of the shelter, instead of orienting the shelter in the first place to eliminate or reduce the solar panel power production needed!

If you put the cart before the horse, you will need more horses!

Keeping you cool during a heat wave.
EARTH TOOLS TIP: Tune up your cooling unit before the greatest need is like tuning up your car for a long trip!
WHAT: How to be prepared to lower your cooling cost during the greatest need.
WHY: It’s about the number of hours the unit runs for a given time interval and not about the number of days between filter changes,
HOW: Change your cooling filter just before highest daily temperature period for the highest efficiency during the greatest need.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME? Comfort, healthier indoor air quality, energy savings can be more than the filter costs!

Have you ever wondered why utility companies selling a product are offering you incentives on how to use less of their product? I looked into this and found there is a great benefit to the utility company; they get to charge you for their loss of revenues and cost for their programs! (See Attached)

However if the customers implement these saving programs on their own, the utility company cannot charge customer for their savings or implementation. Our utility company referred to these as a “Free Rider”.
So is it “Free Enterprise” or monopoly control?

It’s too bad the gasoline companies didn’t think of this earlier, they could have charge for the gasoline saving from more energy efficient engines just by subsidizing your purchase of a car or for the “lost revenues” from electric cars.

Have you looked into your utility companies “Demand Side Management” programs? Who’s the “demanding side”: consumers? Who’s the “managing side”: a company?
Putting it another way, “Consumer control by a company”! I would prefer to be a “Free Rider” customer than a “Lost revenue” customer. What about you?

Now imagine you live down wind of a data center “…where the heat is returned to the environment.” (The heat is not returned but is greater that what had occurred before, concluding that it is an addition.) or “Of the various cooling strategies to return heat to the environment…that include cooling towers accelerate the rate of heat transfer…” (The faster rate of heat transfer will raise the surrounding temperature and humidity.)?

Community Advantages:
1. Reduced grid infrastructure needs
2. Lower demand at peak time of day
3. Rate payers are not burden with infrastructure improvements
4. Water requirements can be reduced
Developers Advantages:
1. Lower utility cost
2. Higher efficiency cooling during natural night sky radiation cooling
3. 100% chiller loading run time
4. Unit sizes can be reduced due to partial or full offset of thermal storage system used (ice or 32 degree chill water)
5. Becomes a community partner
Developers Disadvantages:
1. Developer pays full cost of equipment installation
2. Additional space needed for Thermal Storage Units
3. Higher maintenance cost.

This type system could be a requirement for Data Center developments.

What to do after the freezing weather?
1. LOW WATER PRESSURE-If you find your water flow at your fixtures is low, check your faucet aerators and washing machine screens for debris. As my older brother Peter pointed out, debris from the interior walls of the pipes flakes off as the pipes expand and contract. This material could be rust or deposits from the treated water. This is especially true for hot water lines.
2. HOW TO ADJUST YOUR SEWER CHARGES FOR A BROKEN WATER PIPE-When I perform consumer utility audits, I inform customers they can ask for a sewer credit for water leaks. Sewer bill are usually tied to the volume of water consumption. Your water leaks during this winter may have the effect of increasing your summer billing because usually the summer sewer billing is bracketed to a proportion of the winter billing. Utility companies do this because most of their customers winter water use is going into the sewer system and not outdoors watering lawns and washing cars.
3. HOW DO YOU REQUEST A BILLING ADJUSTMENT?
If you do have a water leak after the freeze, present your repair bill or parts bill to your sewer utility provider and request a sewer charge adjustment for water not requiring the sewer service. Your history consumption/billing will provide a clue to your typical winter usage. It has been my experience that the sewer provider will adjust your charges if you ask for it with a repair receipt.
They may not adjust for a toilet leak as this water did go into their system.
By graphing your water use per day, you can determine your excess use from a leak or from dripping your faucets. A “Share in the Savings” calculation form is in the making.

210811-REFRIGERATORS LEARN AND EARN-MAINTAIN TO GAIN-There is another set of refrigeration coils that should be cleaned regularly besides your central compressor cooling coil outside. They are usually found on your kitchen refrigerator and are located near the floor. Air is drawn in below the door at the floor level (coolest air is at the floor) and is discharged in the rear of the unit. This is why there should be at least a 1” air space behind the unit so the hot air can dissipate to the room, similar to your central unit compressor outside.
Using a bottle brush and a vacuum, you can remove the layer of dust that is causing you higher energy use as well as keeping the kitchen cooler.
The before photo shows that there is at least 45% of the coil blocked, i.e. 45% more energy needed. A regularly cleaned coil will make your refrigerator last longer and use less energy. This is especially true if you have pets.
