The Global Scholars Program is partnering with Western University to bring the World’s Challenge Challenge competition to the University of Tulsa, and we would like to announce that applications are now being accepted. The competition, which takes place over the course of several weeks, asks students to choose a pressing global challenge and to present an idea that will help solve that challenge. Students are encouraged to consider the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Students, either undergraduate, graduate, or both, will form teams of three to submit an application describing their idea before crafting 5-7 minute presentations which they will be assessed on during the competition. The teams will present at the University of Tulsa during the initial round of paper applications is due on February 10. Teams will then be selected to give a 5-7 minute presentations on March 8th. The presentations will be reviewed by two panels of judges who will choose the top 3 teams per panel. The teams who are chosen to continue will present their challenge and idea a second time in the final round on Saturday, March 30th. From this group of 6 teams, 3 will receive awards from the University of Tulsa. The team who finishes first will be given the opportunity to travel to Western University in London, Canada to take part in the international competition which takes place from June 2nd-7th, 2019. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 international teams, consisting of a 3rd place prize of $7,500 (CDN), a second place prize of $15,000 (CDN), and the first place prize of $30,000 (CDN). The prize money is intended to assist in the development and implementation of the teams’ proposed solution. The purpose of the competition is to create and support international dialogue and innovation to confront the world’s most significant concerns. It is with this sentiment that we would like to ask for your help in creating interest in the student body. We would be delighted if you could share this information with your students in the hope that they will take part in the unique opportunity that the World’s Challenge Challenge offers. The spring application deadline for Global Scholars is approaching! Apply by January 15th to be considered. Global Scholars is an innovative, interdisciplinary program uniting students of all majors to study the challenges of an increasingly globalized world. Our farewell dinner included a performance by a Panamanian folk dance group.

During our last two days in Panama we visited a coffee farm, a bee and butterfly farm, and a chocolate factory.

Centro Mamoni campsite provided us with an up-close example of self-sustainable living. Anna and Niko (the managers) gave us a tour of the reservation and showed us how they use hydroelectricity to power the camp, grow the food used at the camp, employ a compost bin for leftover food, and even use a compost toilet. Their eco-friendly practices help the rainforest terrain stay natural and beautiful. The camp is crucial for protecting the narrowest part of the country from encroaching development—it was an amazing mini trip!
