Greenwood Archaeology

Today marks the start of week 2 of our MHTT virtual field school. These students are amazing and have already uncovered more historic photos, documents, maps, comparative artifacts from other early 20th century sites, and hours of recorded oral histories than I have ever seen before. It feels like we are digitally un-erasing or restoring a section of the Historic Greenwood District using every type of material we can find. I love it here and I wish we could have tried this years ago! But I was too tied to the traditional standard that archaeological training can only be done in person. These students are teaching me whats possible and that I have some things to un-learn myself. And its only been 6 days 😅

It all starts tomorrow! We are kicking off our 4th field season in Greenwood and launching our first ever virtual archaeological field school! Going virtual allows us to take a break from digging and focus on training students in deep archival and artifact-based research, digital storytelling and object stories, mapmaking, and finalizing the new Greenwood Archaeology Curriculum. All the previous years of research has led to this moment. I am beyond excited to dive deep into the archives and see what we find. Last time I went searching through the records with my archaeology students I found one of my ancestors. Cant want to see what happens next! Stay tuned.....
