French Primer Construction - February 2026. Report from David Nabine, LEI Director of Africa.
Ten primer development experts representing twenty-seven French-speaking African countries gathered at this workshop aimed to design and reporduce a new French primer tailored to the educational realities of Francopone Africa. The goal of this workshop was to create a structured and contextualized modern French literacy manual designed to effectively support adult learners and out-of-school youth in reading French in general and the Bible in French in particular. LEI's textbook design experts used this workshop to analyze the existing manual, define a harmonized phonetic progression, develop comprehensive learning units, and collectively validate a structured prototype of the new French manual.
Key results were the creation of a complete structural prototype of the new primer in modern French; pedagogical harmonization for the 27 Francophone African countries; common technical basis of the LEI method for the regional literacy program; harmonization of the phonetic and pedagogical progression; and strengthening of participants' technical skills in producing syllabaries in other languages.
This new primer will contribute to improving functional literacy, strengthening basic reading and writing skills, harmonizing teaching practices, and supporting LEI strategies in the areas of literacy and education in reading the Word of God in French, in Francophone Africa.

Literacy is the ability to read and write. Illiteracy is the inability to read and write. According to UNESCO, there are nearly 1 billion adults around the world who cannot read and write. In the United States alone, it is estimated that there are more than 30 million adults who cannot read and write well enough to function daily. Illiteracy is a problem in developing and developed countries. Those who cannot read and write are more likely to live in poverty and are more susceptible to sickness and disease. Literacy & Evangelism International exists to help those who cannot read and write by sharing the gift of reading.
Evangelism is the act of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe the strongest witness to the Gospel of Jesus is how we live our lives daily. An important part of our daily life is reading God’s Word, the Bible, and understanding how God relates to humankind and how we should live our lives. If adults cannot read for themselves, how can they know what God has said in the Bible? Evangelism is an integral part of our mission as we develop Bible-content literacy materials. As adults learn to read and write, they do so while reading the Bible and hearing for themselves what God has revealed to us through His Word.
Literacy & Evangelism International exists to equip the Church to share the message of Jesus Christ through the gift of reading.
This calling leads us around the world to develop Bible-content basic literacy materials (called primers). In addition to developing materials, LEI provides training in teaching as well as developing literacy programs.

"Every literacy tutor, teacher, or supporter is participating in something larger than education. You are helping people move from hearing to understanding... literacy workers help people access knowledge, Scripture, and opportunity. Teaching someone to read may seem like a small act. But in God’s hands, it can change families, churches, and communities."

ORU Career Day! Bob and Ana Biederman attended Career Day at Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, OK. They had a great day and talked with many people about literacy evangelism who had not heard about LEI. Ana also spoke with some school principals about the need for literacy among students' parents and how low literacy levels among parents can affect the education of school children. Thank you, ORU, for hosting and inviting LEI to participate in this yearly event.

"They read from the Book of the Law... making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read." (📖 Nehemiah 8:8)
"Today, millions of adults around the world... cannot read the Bible, a medicine label, or even their own names.
"When someone learns to read, something remarkable happens.
They can:
Read the Bible for themselves,
Learn new skills for life,
Teach their children,
Participate more fully in church and community.
"Literacy is not just an educational tool. It is a ministry of empowerment. When we teach someone to read, we are helping open the door for them to encounter God’s Word personally."
