What happens when we use archaeology to uncover the stories history tried to bury?

This Saturday, September 12, Black History Saturdays is back at Langston University–Tulsa, and Dr. Alicia Odewale is taking our participants into Black Forensic Archaeology 101!

At Black History Saturdays, archaeology isn’t just something we read about it is something our participants experience. From our youngest learners to our adults, everyone gets an opportunity to understand how archaeology, science, history, and storytelling can work together to recover Black lives and Black stories.

We are teaching our community not only to learn history, but to investigate it, question it, preserve it, and tell it.

And a huge THANK YOU to National Geographic Society for believing in and supporting this work. Your investment helps us create learning experiences that many of our families would otherwise never have access to.

Black History Saturdays is this Saturday!

Join us for a powerful day of learning, culture, community, and great food at Langston University–Tulsa!

Whether you’re Pre-K, a student, an educator, a parent, or simply someone who loves learning, there’s a place for you at Black History Saturdays.

Did you know that Black History Saturdays has a permanent Special Archaeology Elective with National Geographic Explorer Dr. Alicia Odewale?

This month’s archaeology class, “An Underground Tour of Africa,” will take participants on a fascinating journey through the archaeology of some of Africa’s oldest kingdoms, beginning with Ancient Egypt. Discover how archaeology helps uncover the stories, innovations, and civilizations that shaped our world long before many history books begin.

At Black History Saturdays, we believe Black history is more than a month it’s a foundation for understanding who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going.

Bring your children. Bring your parents. Bring a friend. Together, let’s learn, ask questions, and celebrate the richness of our shared history.

History isn’t just something we read it’s something we preserve, explore, and pass on.

Yesterday at Black History Saturdays, we had an incredible day of learning, connection, and solidarity!

We were honored to welcome students, teachers, the assistant principal, and the principal from South High School in Denver, Colorado, to Langston University–Tulsa to experience Black History Saturdays firsthand.

This visit represents something much bigger than a field trip. Through 2892 Miles To Go, our Black History Saturdays educators have had the privilege of mentoring South High students as they develop projects addressing social justice issues in Denver. This powerful collaboration, envisioned and led by Ashley Lamb-Sinclair, continues to show what is possible when educators and young people come together across state lines.

There is a powerful contrast between our two states. In Colorado, Black History is a state requirement in schools. In Oklahoma, we continue to navigate restrictions on how Black history is taught. Yesterday, these students had the opportunity to stand on the front lines with us—to witness what it looks like when a community refuses to allow its history to be erased.

Black History Saturdays has always been about more than teaching history. It’s about building courageous leaders, preserving truth, and reminding the next generation that our stories matter.

Thank you to our friends from South High School for spending the day with us. We hope you returned to Denver inspired, just as you inspired all of us.

A special thank you to Ashley Lamb-Sinclair and 2892 Miles To Go for creating opportunities that connect young people across the country in the pursuit of truth, justice, and education. This is what building a movement looks like.

Did you know… the lock on your door traces back to a Black inventor? 🔐

At Black History Saturdays, we don’t just talk about history, we experience it.

Dr. Alicia Odewale broke down the story of Osborne Dorsey, a formerly enslaved Black man who patented the modern door lock in 1878. Think about that… something we use every single day for safety and security was created by a Black innovator whose name most of us were never taught.

This is why we do this work.

Our children deserve to know that Black people didn’t just survive history we shaped it. From the doors we walk through to the systems we’re still fighting to rebuild.

This Saturday, we’re not just teaching Black history… we’re tasting it.

Our Black History Saturdays menu is curated by Chef Ant, a proud Gullah Geechee native from South Carolina and member of the Chef Kulture Collective led by Chef Chad Cherry. He brings the flavors of the Lowcountry straight to Greenwood honoring the traditions, resilience, and brilliance of our people through food.

This is what makes Black History Saturdays different.
We don’t just talk about history we experience it.

Join us at 9AM at our new home, Langston University – Tulsa Campus, in the heart of Greenwood.
