Congratulations, Amy Hendrix-Dicken, on the publication of another co-authored paper.
Comparing Self-Reported and Aggregated Racial Classification for American Indian/Alaska Native Youths in YRBSS: 2021
Published on February 22, 2024, in the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH), with her co-authors Ashton Gatewood and Micah Hartwell, this work highlights how common methodological practices related to the reporting of race/ethnicity are erasing Indigenous experiences. These approaches have serious ramifications in public health and healthcare where many initiatives and funding are data driven. While we commend the CDC for providing self-report identity data in YRBSS, far too many large data sets do not provide this level of identity data. It is imperative that disaggregated data be available and that researchers truly consider the ramifications of using catchall categories such as “multiracial” in their analyses.
Well done, Amy!
