New little mug out of the kiln this week. Over the past number of months, I’ve been reevaluating some of the things that I’m interested in with the way surface works on my pots. Sifting through my content, spending some time thinking about how surface tell a story, use, age, history, memory, and material, I’ve been restructuring how I think about the layers of surface start to read in the finished piece. I often used colored terra sigilatta and copper oxide to create a patina that spoke of antique objects and surfaces. As artists and makers, there comes a point where, looking into new ways to say things takes over and we get to reevaluate how we show those things in the work. I’ve been playing around with how a new clay, white sig, and underglaze color are beginning to give me the same qualities with new exciting vocabulary. The richness of that dark clay coming through the white slip is pretty dreamy to me, and the crisp vibrant color is electric. So many new exciting ideas! Here’s to all those out there currently going down the rabbit hole of new ideas and old ideas visualized a new ways. Happy Wednesday!

Dark clay, light sig, no copper, cone 6. Here’s that little cup from before, OM4 sig, probably around cone 4.5. Little test was limping along, so I shut it off early, but so much promise in the surface. The brown stoneware coming through the thin sig layer is saying some things that I hope to pay more attention to. It’s been awhile since I’ve spent time testing a new departure and it’s exciting and terrifying all at the same time. Onwards……..

This little guy is the first test on some new ideas that have been swimming for some time. This will be a nice dark mid range stoneware, and just after this photo this little guy took a quick dip in a thin white terra sig. For some time I’ve been thinking about color, layers, time, the patina of time and of objects and surfaces and the stories those surfaces provide. This is going to be a deep dive into a different pallet, new materials, new temps, and new surfaces. Come along and let me know what you think as things could get weird. But, you gotta start somewhere…….

These are also some of the first things I’ve made with intent since around February. Moving a studio, taking over much of the operations of a gallery, starting a more robust apprentice/resident/learning/teaching component to the studio, making space for community engagement, and supporting a brave spouse who has boldly gone back into teaching art to 7th and 8th graders, there hasn’t been much time left for making. However, as most know out there, my hands may have been working in other ways, but my head was steadily thinking about new directions. And it’s time to start a hopefully fruitful and somewhat terrifying exploration. But that’s where the next real thing lies if I’m not mistaken.
