🚒🔥 FIRE SAFETY STARTS WITH OUR HICKERSON HAWKS! 🦅❤️

🚨 October is Fire Prevention Month, and our Hickerson Hawks had an exciting opportunity to learn some important, potentially lifesaving lessons from our amazing community heroes at the Hickerson Volunteer Fire Department! 👨‍🚒👩‍🚒🚒

🔥 Our students learned that firefighters do much more than put out fires! They help keep our community safe, respond to emergencies, and teach us how to protect ourselves and others. ❤️

🏠 Here are a few FIRE SAFETY TIPS to practice at home with your family!

🚨 Smoke Alarms Save Lives! Make sure your home has working smoke alarms and test them monthly.

🛑 STOP, DROP, and ROLL! If your clothes catch fire, stop moving, drop to the ground, cover your face, and roll until the flames are out.

🚪 GET LOW AND GO! If there's smoke, crawl low beneath it and get outside quickly.

🏡 HAVE AN ESCAPE PLAN! Know two ways out of every room when possible, and practice your family's fire escape plan twice a year.

📍 MEET OUTSIDE! Choose a safe meeting place away from your home. Once you're out, stay out!

📞 CALL 911! Know how to call for help in an emergency.

❤️🚒 A HUGE HAWK THANK YOU to the Hickerson Volunteer Fire Department for taking time out of their busy schedules to invest in the safety of our students! We are incredibly grateful for these brave men and women who serve and protect our community! 👏🔥

🦅 At Hickerson Elementary STEM School, we believe some of the most valuable lessons come from the real-world experiences our community partners provide! 💛🖤

🌱🌼 Fantastic Friday Fun with Kindergarten! 🌼🌱

Our Hickerson Elementary STEM School kindergarten students kicked off their FIRST Fantastic Friday of the year with some hard work, teamwork, and outdoor learning! 💛🖤🐾

🧤🌿 Our little gardeners rolled up their sleeves and got busy clearing out our Native Garden to make room for an exciting expansion! 🌻🦋🐝

These hardworking Hawks learned that taking care of a garden requires responsibility, teamwork, and a little elbow grease! 💪🌱 They worked together to prepare the space for even more native plants that will help support butterflies, bees, and other important pollinators! 🦋🐝🌸

🌎💚 What makes this experience even more special? Our students aren't just learning about caring for the environment—they're actually making a difference right here on our campus!

🌱 Little hands, BIG impact! 💛

We can't wait to watch our Native Garden grow and see the lasting impact these kindergarteners will make throughout the year! 🌼🦋🌿

👏💛 Way to go, Kindergarten! Your first Fantastic Friday was a fantastic success!

🌵💗 From our garden…to the jelly jar! 💗🌵

Our Hickerson Elementary STEM School kindergarten students had a sweet hands-on learning experience as they made their very own prickly pear jelly! 🍯👩‍🍳🧑‍🍳

The prickly pear fruits—called tunas 🌵—were harvested right here on our campus from our Drought-Resistant Garden! ☀️🌱 Students were able to see how something growing in one of our school gardens can be harvested, prepared, preserved, and turned into a product. Talk about learning coming full circle! 🔄💛

And prickly pear tunas aren't just beautiful—they're nutritious, too! ❤️ These colorful fruits provide fiber, vitamin C, and beneficial plant compounds called antioxidants. 🌵🍎 They are another great example of the variety of foods that plants can provide!

Our kindergarteners helped transform our Hickerson-grown prickly pears into beautiful jars of jelly while learning about gardening, food preservation, measurement, science, and entrepreneurship along the way. 🧪🥄📏💡

But the learning doesn't stop with making the jelly! 💰🏪 These jars will become part of our student-run School Business and will be available for purchase at our Spring Plant Sale 🌱🌸 and Lemonade Day! 🍋💛

🌱 We grew it.
🌵 We harvested it.
🍯 We made it.
🏪 And soon…we'll sell it!

That's what hands-on learning looks like at Hickerson! 💛🖤

♻️🥫 YES, WE CAN, HICKERSON! 🦄💛

Hickerson Elementary STEM School is participating in the Million Cans Recycling Contest! 🎉 We’re joining 72 schools across 19 states to help reach a nationwide goal of recycling at least 4 MILLION aluminum cans! 🌎🤝

📅 The contest runs October 1, 2026–April 30, 2027, and we need our families and community to help!

🥤 Students who bring in 50 aluminum cans will earn a soft drink to enjoy at school! That’s approximately one kitchen trash bag of uncrushed cans—bag amounts vary, so aim for 50! 🥫

🍨 When 100% of a class’s students bring in their 50 cans, that class will earn an ice cream party! Teamwork makes the celebration sweeter! 🎉

📚🦄 Our Pre-K and kindergarten students received a recycling story provided by the contest to help them learn how small actions can make a big difference. We’re sharing that story here so families can enjoy it together! 💚

🎧📖 Listen to Mrs. Michelle read the recycling story here:

Thank you to CFC Recycling for partnering with us as our students learn to care for the environment and work toward a shared goal! ♻️🤝

Start saving your empty, dry aluminum cans and send them to school with your student! 🏫 Every can counts! 🥫💛

🦋🌿 THREE MORE MONARCHS TAKE FLIGHT! 🌿🦋

Our Hickerson monarch family is growing—and flying! 💛🖤 We released THREE more beautiful monarch butterflies today: two males and one female! 🦋🦋🦋

That brings us to FOUR monarchs released so far! 🎉

As we celebrate each butterfly taking flight, we also want to highlight the plant that made this entire experience possible—MILKWEED! 🌿

🐛 Why does milkweed matter? Monarch caterpillars depend on milkweed for survival. It is the only type of plant monarch caterpillars eat, and female monarch butterflies seek out milkweed to lay their eggs. No milkweed means no food for the caterpillars—and fewer places for the next generation of monarchs to begin their journey.

That’s why planting native milkweed can make such a difference! 🌱 By adding milkweed to schoolyards, gardens, and landscapes, we can create important habitat for monarchs while giving students an incredible opportunity to observe the butterfly life cycle firsthand. 🥚➡️🐛➡️🟢➡️🦋

Our students discovered these monarch caterpillars on the milkweed growing right here in our Native Plant Garden at Hickerson. 🌿💛 What started with planting a few plants has turned into a real-world lesson in conservation, ecosystems, life cycles, and the impact we can have on the world around us. 🌎

🦋 Monarch Release Update
💙 Males released: 3
💗 Females released: 1
🦋 Total released: 4!

And we’re not finished yet! We still have chrysalises waiting for their big day. 🦋✨

🌿 Plant milkweed. Grow habitat. Help monarchs. 🦋
