Deaf Awareness Month is held annually in September. Its purpose is to educate and inform people about the culture, language, and diversity in the Deaf community. It is scheduled to coincide with International Deaf Awareness Week, which is generally held the last week of September.

According to federal statistics, at least 600,000 Americans have hearing loss that qualifies them for inclusion in the Deaf community. This community often faces unique challenges regarding education, access to healthcare and public services, employment, and more. Deaf Awareness Month draws attention to these issues as well as to the culture of the Deaf community and the various forms of sign language and other types of communication they use. Deaf Awareness Month is separate from Deaf History Month, which is held annually in April to recognize events important to the history of the Deaf population as well as historic accomplishments of deaf people.

Do you have student loan debt and are counting on Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)?

There has been some discussion in the news about borrowers seeing previously credited Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) payments adjusted or removed. NEA Member Benefits and SAVI are monitoring the situation closely for any developments that could impact borrowers’ PSLF eligibility or qualified payment counts.

In the meantime, take screenshots of your Student Aid account to document any “before and after” changes to qualified payment counts and reach out to Savi's support team if you notice any changes.

October 8th is our General Membership Meeting! This event is open to ALL REA members!

Today I joined Renton High School on their first contracted day! We began our day with a Community Asset Mapping experience.
After lunch, we went over new procedures for RHS and received the de-escalation training that is required per the MOU in our contract!

Our contract explicitly states “In the 2026-2017 school year, all staff will receive the training in August days, Building PD Days, or November/December Building-PLC Days.”
