With FFA, there isn’t really a “season.” But if we had to mark the end of one year and the beginning of another, it would probably be State FFA Convention, and what a year it has been!

In September, Jude earned Reserve Grand Champion in Agriscience and qualified for the National SRM Competition. Ashlynn and Lucia competed in the Flowers and Finance competition and were recognized for their outstanding work.

In October, students traveled to the National FFA Convention, competing in Agriscience and participating in the Microsoft Collaboration experience.

November brought another milestone as Tucumcari hosted its first weld-off, while our teams continued competing in the New Mexico Weld-Off Series.

The new year brought new challenges. We continued our weld-off season, began preparing for the New Mexico High School BBQ Challenge, and had students selected to attend National FFA’s NextGen Power and Structural Technical Conference.

As spring arrived, judging season kicked into full swing. The Land Team placed 2nd in the state and qualified for the National Land Judging Competition. Our BBQ Team captured the State Championship and earned a trip to Nationals. The Weld-Off Team won the Pinto Weld-Off, qualified for the state competition, and finished 3rd in the state.

We wrapped up the year with Bryson and Jude elected as district officers and with both students winning their respective Agriscience categories and qualifying for Nationals.

Some people might look at our program and ask, “You don’t have animals in a barn, so are you really an ag program?”

My answer is simple: absolutely.

Every day, we work to help students learn new skills, discover new opportunities, and grow as leaders. From agriscience to welding, land judging to BBQ, we are showing students what FFA can offer—even from a small town like Tucumcari.

We may be a small program, but our students continue to prove that big things can come from small towns.
