I still have my silver metal hard hat from fighting forrest fires with my brother Chris. We got to go through a BLM chow line once and there was a table with stickers so Chris grabbed one that said crew boss and stuck it on my helmet. I got some real sour looks from the older more seasoned firefighters.
I remember drawing the short straw to cut down a burning snag at the edge of a cliff. I was honored that chuck Z included me in the draw. Ends up at age 14 I fell the snag up the hill. I felt like a man that day. This may sound corny but to have your boss and older brother have the confidence in you to do the job and do it right was a powerful boost to me. They did offer to take my short stick because it was so dangerous but I was pumped and ready to do the job. It is a good thing the lord has looked out for me all these years. The short stick isn't always bad. Something good comes from everything!!!
