The Southwest PGA Foundation is pleased to announce this year's Birdies for Good fundraiser on Friday, September 6, 2024.
In cooperation with more than a dozen local Southwest PGA golf professionals, I need your help as we strive to raise dollars and awareness for a very deserving cause in our community. This event has been created as a way for us to utilize the great game that has provided each of us with so much as a way to give back to the community and those in need.
This year's "Birdies for Good" day will benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Southwest PGA Foundation: Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) provides essential support and comfort to children and their families who are receiving treatment at world-renowned pediatric centers across the metro areas where we are hosting events. By visiting their website, you can learn more about the myriad ways RMHC makes a difference in the lives of those in need during difficult times. Southwest PGA Foundation supports our youth programs and PGA HOPE veteran-centric initiatives. The Southwest PGA Foundation is dedicated to making a lasting impact in our communities through various initiatives. Our youth programs and Special Olympics focus on providing educational opportunities, life skills development, and access to golf, helping them build confidence and achieve their full potential. PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is a program that uses golf as a therapeutic tool to enhance veterans' physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being. Many veterans who participate in PGA HOPE have reported significant improvements in their quality of life, including reduced symptoms of PTSD, decreased feelings of isolation, and improved physical health. PGA HOPE has saved lives by providing a supportive community and a positive outlet, giving veterans a renewed sense of purpose and hope.
Thank you to Generation Golf for hosting "Birdies for Good" at Dorado Golf Club in Tucson, AZ. I am excited to introduce my latest endeavor, a project of both passion and perseverance—my new book, "GOLF Body, Mind and Soul - The Heart of the Game." This journey to publication has been a long time coming, marked by moments of doubt and hesitation. For years, I struggled with procrastination, questioning my identity as an author and battling the nagging feeling of being an imposter in the literary world. Especially for the fact that I can’t spell and my grammar is awful at best. Who was I to write a book? Yet, despite these challenges, my love for the game of golf and the deeper lessons it offers about life drove me forward.
Writing this book has been a transformative experience, allowing me to explore the connection between the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of the game of golf and life. "GOLF Body, Mind, and Soul - The Heart of the Game" is more than just a concept on how to play; it's an invitation to understand how every shot and every moment on the course can mirror the successes and so-called failures we face in life.
As I share this journey of love for golf and life with you, I humbly ask for your support. What are You Thankful for in Life?
Sometimes, we lose sight of what is right in front of us! Here are some of the things I try not to lose sight of that are so important in my life. I’m so thankful for my loving wife, family, and friends, plus all the opportunities and experiences in life. However, I’m most grateful for all of God’s plans: forgiveness, Redemption, Righteousness, and Worship.
Being Grateful Can Help You Reach Your Goals
It’s essential to have a long-range goal you are striving to achieve to give you a sense of direction. However, attaining this goal should not determine your happiness or achievement, especially at the expense of your friends, family, and loved ones. Choosing to be grateful for what you already have and what you’ve already achieved in your life will be an enormous benefit in reaching your goals.
Gratitude Makes You Happier
Studies have proven that feelings of appreciation change the way your brain functions. When you consciously make yourself aware of all the positive things in your life, you are happier and more content. When you are satisfied and feeling good about your life, it’s easier to believe that more good things will happen and you will achieve your goals.
Stress Dramatically Decreases with Gratitude
If you believe that you are not good enough and you're always trying to improve, it will eventually lead to a life of fear and discontent. Yes, you want to grow and reach your goals, and you want to unlock all the potential that’s inside you. But finding a way to balance this desire with gratitude for what you’ve already accomplished and what you have in your life today is far more critical. While continually pushing yourself forward, it’s easy to believe you aren’t good enough today. The key is focusing on what you are grateful for today to lower your stress level and encourage you to enjoy life's journey, leading to your goal.
Gratitude Makes You More Optimistic
Thinking the grass is always greener on the other side is a sure way to bring discontent to your life. It gives you the sense that you may miss out or never achieve the life you think you want or desire. This doubt makes everything in life harder than it needs to be. It may lead you to give up on your dreams because you don’t believe you can attain them. Keeping a thankful attitude offers you a way to appreciate your life today and the ability to look forward to the future.
If you feel you’ve been too focused on a long-range goal and it’s making you unappreciative of what you already have, you need to concentrate on obtaining a grateful heart. It doesn’t take extra time or effort, although it makes a huge difference in your outlook on life. Start by noting all the little things you are grateful for that happened throughout your day, last week, or the past few months. You may want to consider keeping a daily gratitude journal to stay focused on the positive aspects of your life. I promise you will be surprised what an impact it will have on your attitude towards life!
Remember, long-range goals require planning. Set small, attainable goals to build your path to joy and happiness, creating a step-by-step process for living an amazing life.

What a great event and champion! Congratulations to Scottie Scheffler for winning the Masters for the second time.
I have always said, "Golf does not determine your self-worth by a good or bad shot, a birdie or a bogey; instead, it is played for the pure joy of the game."
However, I love Scottie Scheffler's quote because it reflects a deep understanding of his identity as a believer in Jesus Christ. He says, "Winning this golf tournament does not change my identity; my identity is secured. My victory is secured on the cross." He emphasizes that external achievements or successes do not determine his worth and identity. Instead, he finds his ultimate security and victory in his faith in Christ and the sacrifice made on the cross.
His quote conveys the profound truth that true victory and identity come from spiritual beliefs in Jesus Christ rather than worldly accomplishments. It reflects a perspective that values eternal principles over temporary achievements, stressing the importance of faith and inner strength in navigating life's challenges and successes on and off the golf course.

The real challenge lies not in acquiring information but in critically examining and understanding our beliefs and assumptions.
What we think we know may not align with objective reality or truth. Our biases, preconceived notions, and limited perspectives can distort our understanding of life and the world. Therefore, the quote emphasizes the importance of humility, open-mindedness, and a willingness to question our beliefs and ideas. It encourages us to constantly seek deeper insights, challenge our assumptions, and strive for a more truthful, accurate understanding of reality.
In life, the issue is not merely about accumulating worldly knowledge; it's about discerning between worldly perspectives and biblical wisdom. What we think we know from worldly sources may not always align with the eternal truths revealed in the Bible. I have found that focusing on a golf shot for just a few seconds is critical for hitting your best shot. In those moments of concentration, everything else fades away, allowing me to direct my mind and body to my target. The clarity of focus helps me visualize the shot, which calms my mind and body to execute my swing to the best of my ability.
This level of focus in golf translates directly into my day-to-day life. Just as focusing on a golf target improves my performance on the course, focusing on what I'm trying to accomplish in life enhances my overall productivity and success. Whether setting goals, taking on new challenges, or making important decisions, maintaining a clear and focused mindset enables me to effectively channel my thoughts and efforts, leading to better results.
The quote, "You will hit the ball where your mind directs it, give it direction with a goal in mind," can relate to the concept of focus in golf and life. In golf, it emphasizes the importance of mental clarity and having a clear goal in mind when making a stroke. Similarly, in life, having a clear vision or goal helps direct our actions and decisions toward achieving that goal.

I can’t say I never had to go diving to look for any of my clubs in the water before. However, there may have been a time or two when I lost my grip and had to search for it in the desert. Back in the day, my fuse to a short temper may have been a little shorter than it is now regarding hitting the ideal golf shot or missing a putt. It's remarkable how time, life experiences, maturity, and the grace of God can shape one's personal development.
In the quote, I encourage a positive perspective on the setbacks and challenges we encounter in life, suggesting that what we often perceive as failures could be valuable opportunities in disguise. The idea of embracing these moments, rather than viewing them negatively or regretfully, is engrained in the belief that every experience, particularly the difficult ones, holds a lesson that can contribute to our growth and eventual success.
The phrase "so-called failures" suggests possible failure. Or what one might consider a failure, another might see as an opportunity or a necessary detour on the path to achievement. The Southwest PGA Bill Strausbaugh Award – Rick Price, who serves as the PGA Director of Golf at the Views Golf Club in Oro Valley (Ariz.), has been honored with the Southwest PGA Bill Strausbaugh Award.
This award is presented to a PGA Member who exemplifies exceptional character, integrity, and leadership, particularly through teaching and mentoring fellow PGA Professionals. Having been a PGA member since 1994, Price has dedicated over 30 years of his career to mentoring numerous assistants and associates by offering guidance and sharing his wealth of experiences.
Through his unwavering commitment to mentoring, leadership, and advocacy, Price has played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of countless PGA and LPGA Professionals. His efforts have not only elevated the perception of golf but have also showcased the excellence of PGA Professionals, strengthening the Association's reputation as a champion of professionalism and expertise.
Price is an active contributor to his community, regularly volunteering and assisting in organizing events and outreach programs benefiting initiatives such as Cure Cancer, Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Southwest PGA Foundation, Feed My Starving Children, PGA HOPE, First Tee of Tucson, Ricki Rarick Junior Golf, and the LPGA Girls Golf of Tucson.
He has also served on various committees and held officer positions within both the Section and Chapter, including two terms as President of the Southern Chapter and serving as President of the Section from 2003-2004.
This marks Price's second award within the Section, previously earning the Southwest PGA Golf Professional of the Year award in 1996, in addition to numerous awards and accolades in the Southern Chapter.
