Tips for Coaches
As coaches, some of your most important work will be to help your clients establish new habits or eliminate old ones. You owe it to yourself and your clients to become fluent in the science of habit change. I say science because neurology and neurotransmitters are actively engaged in habit formation and maintenance. One of the best writers in this area is James Clear. One of his most recent books Atomic Habits is a deep dive into the world of habits. I thought I knew a lot about habits and realized as I delved into his book that I had a lot to learn. His strategies about habit change are sound and clear. More importantly, they work. I am applying what I am reading to my own life and find his ideas to be valuable and immediately applicable. You owe it to yourself and your clients to get this book and start applying what you learn.

What is a problem?
When someone describes a problem, do you know what they are talking about? Your ability to precisely understand the problem space is relevant. What you want to understand is the precise structure of the problem.
If I said to you that I was having problems communicating with my wife would you know what I was referring to? Can you picture exactly what is happening to us? Unlikely isn't it. A problem is a problem because of how we represent it in our unconscious. Your ability to ask the right questions and notice how someone responds to your questions will allow you to bring the problem space to conscious awareness so that the structure, the visual, auditory and kinesthetics that keep the problem in place come to light. I may be picturing, unconsciously a potential adverse outcome, I may be saying something to myself in a critical internal voice, and sighing as I feel a tension in my stomach. All these factors would be uncovered during questioning. Often your client can't directly, consciously, answer your questions so the ability to observe the cues that will be present as someone answers your questions will help elicit the structure of the problem. What are these indicators? Gestures, eye positions changes in voice tone, body shifts, breathing patterns, even skin color changes. It will also be important to understand the context in which the problem occurs. The difficulty may only be experienced as a problem in specific settings.

As a coach, you are doing your best to understand the map, the problem space. Digging this deep will more likely uncover any ecology issues. Attempting to resolve a so-called problem without realizing how it may be serving an important function could leave to unintended consequences.
Once you have all this information you are ready to aid your client in setting their desired outcome.

Going about coaching in this way can create a change in what was referred to as the “problem”. Why? Once someone understands the problem space it is not uncommon for them to change the structure of the problem by shifting the way the problem fit together, the sub modalities.

I have been thinking about mentoring. I have been reviewing in my mind people in my life who have mentored me since my youth and into my adulthood. As an adult I have sought out specific mentors and some have shown up and saw something in me worth supporting and encouraging.. I am the man I am today because of their support, encouragement and challenges to be more. I honor their efforts by striving to be my best, but I also honor them by mentoring and encouraging others.
As a teen living in Peru I had a Scotsman, Danny Duff take me under his wing and teach me how to fish, drive a Volkswagen, and drink beer with a chaser. He helped me into a beginning concept of manhood. Along the way he just taught me about learning and enjoying outdoor activities. Trust me my dad was not a model for this, but he was a great model for having a moral compass and following it.
So I am encouraging you to think about your mentors and how they have helped you to be the man or woman you are today.
I also am consciously mentoring others, especially coaches.
Know there are others who need your support.

As I plan my long-awaited trip, I’m looking at what I want and dream about through the prism of older age. I don’t have unlimited time. Dreaming is the first step toward getting what you want. You must take action, ideally inspired action, to realize your dreams, and at times you must employ faith, acting in the absence of truth or certainty.

Are you committed to following your heart’s desire?

Are you regularly taking action to realize your dreams? If you really want to accomplish your goals, at some point you have to move from planning to action. You must act.
