My Scope of Counseling Practice
There are some key problems and issues that my clients face that cause them to seek therapy. I have worked extensively with people in the following areas:
PTSD - is now experienced by most people and not just war veterans. Addressing the problems caused by the pandemic can dramatically reduce personal Suffering. Unresolved Childhood Trauma - whether conscious or unconscious children suffer from attachment issues during early development. These issues, ranging from mild to severe, unconsciously influence/control adult behavior that normally has a negative impact on others. Addressing these attachment issues (wounded exiles) can make a dramatic difference in how you connect with others in the present. Alcohol and Drug Abuse - In IFS alcohol and drug abuse are considered 'parts' that represent an escape, last line of defense to overwhelming issues. IFS looks to identify and address the underlying issues that activate this 'firefighter part'. With over 6 years of group leadership in alcohol and drug abuse treatment I have seen this IFS approach work effectively for guests who may choose total abstinence or who may continue to use in moderation. Still, moderation is risky as other parts may trigger this 'firefighter' in the future. Overwhelming Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Issues - events in our lives can lead to mental, emotional and spiritual overwhelm. This may be a death of a close loved one, a personal or family financial crisis, and the isolation of COVID restrictions. Overwhelm is often the function of codependent behavior. I work to identify and reconcile codependent behavior to move towards interdependence, a much more effective way to communicate and emotionally connect. Inability to Face and Navigate Significant Change - Retirement, moving and resettling, new personal sense of purpose that is now out of alignment with others. My change model has been tested to be extremely effective in taking out the ossicles, internally and externally, to making change. Sexual Orientation and Appearance Trauma - Who are we to pass judgment? Well many do. Fiends, school mates, and most importantly , family. Whoever passes judgment will create trauma in the psyche of the person who's attention they judge. With the expansion of social media this has accelerated and intensified the judging and shaming process, leaving even deeper scars. Therapy becomes an important tool for stepping outside the judgment and shame to be your true self.
