1987–1988

By Desert Christian’s second year, our school family had grown to 33 students in grades 9–11—and the countdown was officially on: just one more year until DCHS would celebrate its very first graduating class!

Life at Desert Christian was already full. Students continued to enjoy the hot lunch program, Student Council planned activities that brought everyone together, the French Club added something new to campus life, and students prepared for the PACT. Athletics were growing too, with Eagles competing in cross country, soccer, and basketball.

This year also brought Desert Christian’s first Spring Formal—but some of our favorite glimpses into 1987–1988 are the everyday moments. Students didn’t just learn alongside one another; they showed up for each other too—even gathering around a car to help a classmate with car trouble.

Only 33 students, but already so many of the things we still treasure today were taking root: community, service, school spirit, relationships, and a whole lot of fun.

Our Biology students put their scientific thinking skills to the test with the “Black Box” Activity! Without opening their mystery boxes, students had to use observation, experimentation, and evidence to determine what objects might be hidden inside.

Clothespins, marbles, ping pong balls, candy, batteries, and more were among the possibilities…but no peeking allowed! Students had to shake, tilt, listen, weigh, and investigate before developing their best hypothesis about what was inside.

It was a fun, hands-on reminder that science often involves using the evidence we can observe to understand what we can’t see!

🎓 Christian College Fair

Students and families are invited to join us for the Christian College Fair on Monday, September 28, from 6:00–8:00 PM in the Williamson Gymnasium at Desert Christian High School.

Representatives from more than two dozen Christian colleges and universities will be on campus, giving students the opportunity to explore schools, ask questions, and connect directly with college representatives.

Students will also receive a FREE copy of THE Guide to Christian Colleges and Universities, a 200+ page college search resource!

Students are encouraged to register ahead of time at FindYourChristianCollege.com. Registered students will receive a barcode for the fair and a personalized list of attending schools that may match what they’re looking for in a college.

Join us for our FREE Financial Aid Workshop on Tuesday, September 22 at 6:30 PM at the DCS Speedway Campus!

Representatives from the Institute for Better Education (IBE) along with our DCS Financial Aid team will walk families through Arizona Tax Credit Scholarships and the Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA)—including how to apply and where to get started.

This workshop is open to current DCS families, prospective families, and anyone interested in learning more about Arizona’s school choice opportunities.

The earlier you begin exploring financial aid, the better! Come get your questions answered and learn about the resources available to your family.

1986-1987

On August 22, 1986, the first Desert Christian students walked onto the Christ Community Campus for their very first day of school.

Desert Christian Schools began as a high school, founded by a group of parents who looked at the educational opportunities available in Tucson and didn’t see what they wanted for their children, so they created it.

Mr. Jim DeKorne was chosen by the Board as the school’s first principal, and together with a faithful group of teachers, he led Desert Christian through its first year.

There was no graduating class that year. The first graduating class would come later, but it was a wonderful beginning and a testament to what God can do through the faithfulness of His people.

Over the next several weeks and months, we’ll be sharing the story of Desert Christian Schools, going year by year through the people, moments, and milestones that have shaped our school.

And on April 24, we’ll come together to celebrate 40 years of God’s faithfulness!

So save the date and enjoy this look back at Desert Christian through the years!

We remember where we were and what we were doing. We remember the feelings of fear, helplessness, and anger distinctively. We remember in the days to follow how we mourned the loss of so many lives, how we prayed in unity for those whose loved ones were taken from them, for the safety of those still working in the rubble. We remember how in the weeks to follow, we, as a Nation, rose high above and triumphed over that which had so desperately tried to break us. We remember because we vowed never to forget. And we will keep on remembering and teaching our students, not just the history of today, but that even in the darkest of times what it means to stand firmly as a Nation Under God.

Today we hope all of our families will take the time to pray together for our country as we remember this day and for our country, which is preparing for change in leadership!
