One Final Sign-Off

As we prepare to close and archive our digital files, we've spent time reflecting on what to do with our social media accounts. Over the years, our Facebook and Instagram pages have become more than just platforms for updates—they’ve served as living archives of our work, pedagogy, student life, community engagement, and shared histories.

After careful consideration, we’ve decided to sunset, but not close, these accounts. What does that mean? The accounts will remain visible to the public, preserving the documentation for anyone who wishes to revisit, remember, or reflect. However, we will no longer be actively managing, updating, or monitoring them.

This space will stand as a digital trace of our journey—still here, still accessible, but no longer active.

Una última despedida

Mientras nos preparamos para cerrar y archivar nuestros archivos digitales, hemos dedicado tiempo a reflexionar sobre qué hacer con nuestras cuentas en las redes sociales. A lo largo de los años, nuestras páginas de Facebook e Instagram se han convertido en algo más que plataformas para actualizaciones: han servido como archivos vivos de nuestro trabajo, pedagogía, vida estudiantil, compromiso con la comunidad e historias compartidas.

Tras considerarlo detenidamente, hemos decidido cerrar estas cuentas. ¿Qué significa esto? Las cuentas seguirán siendo visibles para el público, preservando la documentación para cualquiera que desee volver a visitarlas, recordarlas o reflexionar sobre ellas. Sin embargo, dejaremos de gestionarlas, actualizarlas o supervisarlas activamente.

Este espacio quedará como un rastro digital de nuestro viaje: todavía aquí, todavía accesible, pero ya no activo.

Exciting updates about our upcoming farewell party:

La Indita will be providing some food!  Thank you to La Indita!

If you aren’t in Tucson we have a way for you to still participate.  Two of our Spring 2025 students have offered to receive pre-recorded video messages and stitch them together into a video that can be shown at the party.  You will need to record and send your videos to Miyu ([email protected]) and Shay ([email protected]) by next Tuesday May 20th at the latest.  Here are further instructions:

Record a video on your phone or computer.  Videos should be NO LONGER than 1 minute.  
Please include your name and relationship to the program (eg. student from cohort of Fall/Spring, Year; Faculty or staff with program from X start date to X end date). 
Save and send to Shay and Miyu
The final date to submit videos is Tuesday, May 20th but it would very helpful and greatly appreciated if you could get them to Shay and Miyu by the 18th if at all possible.
A reminder: The farewell party is scheduled for Sunday, May 25th from 7pm-10pm.  You can find us in the courtyard of the Historic Y.

Si usted no está en Tucson tenemos una manera para que usted pueda participar. Dos de nuestros estudiantes de Primavera 2025 se han ofrecido para recibir mensajes de video pre-grabados y unirlos en un video que se puede mostrar en la fiesta. Tendrás que grabar y enviar tus vídeos a Miyu ([email protected]) y Shay ([email protected]) el próximo martes 20 de mayo a más tardar. Aquí tienes más instrucciones:
Graba un vídeo con tu teléfono o computadora. Los vídeos no deben durar más de 1 minuto. 
Por favor, incluya su nombre y relación con el programa (por ejemplo, estudiante de la cohorte de Otoño/Primavera, Año; Profesor o personal con el programa desde X fecha de inicio hasta X fecha de finalización).
Guardar y enviar a Shay y Miyu
La fecha límite para enviar los vídeos es el martes 20 de mayo, pero sería de gran ayuda y se agradecería enormemente que los enviaras a Shay y Miyu antes del día 18.

Though we are sad that the Border Studies Program is ending, we still want to celebrate the almost 30 years that it existed.  Join us for a farewell party on Sunday, May 25th in the patio of the Historic Y, 738 N. 5th Ave., Tucson. There will be food!  There will be music!  And there will be a time to connect and tell our favorite stories from our time with BSP.

Aunque nos entristece que el Programa de Estudios Fronterizos llegue a su fin, aún queremos celebrar los casi 30 años que existió.  Únase a nosotros para una fiesta de despedida el domingo 25 de mayo en el patio del Historic Y, 738 N. 5th Ave., Tucson. ¡Habrá comida!  ¡Habrá música!  Y habrá tiempo para conectar y contar nuestras historias favoritas de nuestro tiempo con BSP.

Hoy anunciamos con tristeza que, debido a la disminución en el número de estudiantes matriculados, Earlham College ha decidido terminar el Programa de Estudios Fronterizos (BSP) a partir del 30 de junio.
Si bien es cierto que los números del programa han estado en declive desde la pandemia de 2020, habíamos mantenido la esperanza de que el BSP continuaría, sobre todo después de la puesta en marcha de varios planes estratégicos encaminados a robustecer nuestras cifras de matrículas. Antes de comenzar la tarea de poner fin al programa, recordamos hoy el papel importante y transformador que ha desempeñado en las vidas de nuestros estudiantes. Durante los últimos 27 años, el BSP se ha esforzado por crear un programa profundamente arraigado en nuestra frontera. Celebramos y elevamos el conocimiento de base, reconociendo el papel crucial que desempeña la comunidad para impulsar la justicia social e inspirar el cambio. Innumerables estudiantes han experimentado un notable crecimiento personal y profesional durante su estancia en el programa, adquiriendo conocimientos y experiencias de valor incalculable. Estamos desolados por la noticia del cierre del programa e imaginamos que muchos de ustedes también.
El Programa de Estudios Fronterizos debe gran parte de su éxito al increíble apoyo y colaboración de nuestros socios en la comunidad de Tucson, sus alrededores y allende la frontera. Extendemos nuestra gratitud a las muchas familias anfitrionas que abrieron no sólo sus hogares, sino también sus corazones, proporcionando cuidado y amabilidad a los estudiantes mientras navegaban por los desafíos del semestre. Estamos profundamente agradecidos a todos nuestros centros de estudios de campo y de prácticas profesionales, que han ofrecido a nuestros estudiantes una visión práctica, analítica y emocional del compromiso necesario para la justicia social y el cambio. Apreciamos a nuestros asistentes de enseñanza de idiomas, cuyo apoyo crucial ha ayudado a los estudiantes a comprender cómo el lenguaje puede trascender las fronteras. También estamos agradecidos a nuestros socios en México y Estados Unidos, que han guiado nuestros viajes y han organizado oportunidades de aprendizaje significativas; a las personas, escritores, activistas y miembros de la comunidad en Tucson, México, Colombia y otros países, que han hablado en nuestras clases; a las muchas personas que nos han acogido en sus comunidades y hogares; y, por supuesto, a las muchas generaciones de profesores, personal docente, compañeros de estudios y compañeros de lucha que han contribuido a nuestro programa a lo largo de los años. Por último, pero no por ello menos importante, damos las gracias a todos los estudiantes que decidieron pasar su semestre con nosotros en las tierras fronterizas.

We are sad to announce that due to declining enrollment, Earlham College has decided to decommission the Border Studies Program (BSP) effective June 30th.

While it is true that the program enrollment has been in decline since the pandemic in 2020, we had remained hopeful that the BSP would continue. As we begin the task of sunsetting the program we are reminded of the important and transformative role it has played in our students’ lives. Over the past 27 years, BSP has endeavored to create a program deeply embedded in the borderlands. We celebrate and uplift grassroots knowledge, recognizing the crucial role that the community plays in driving social justice and inspiring change. Countless students have undergone remarkable growth during their time in the program, gaining invaluable insights and experiences. We are devastated by the news of the program’s closure and we imagine many of you are too.

The Border Studies Program owes much of its success to the incredible support and collaboration of our community partners. We extend our gratitude to the many homestay families who opened not only their homes but also their hearts, providing care and kindness to students as they navigated the challenges of the semester. We are deeply thankful for all our field study and internship sites that have offered our students practical, analytical, and emotional insights into the commitment required for social justice and change. We appreciate our language teaching assistants, whose crucial support has helped students understand how language can transcend borders. We are also grateful to our partners in Mexico and the United States who have led our trips and arranged meaningful learning opportunities; the individuals, writers, activists and community members who have spoken in our classes; the many people who welcomed us into their communities and homes; and, of course, the many generations of teachers, faculty, staff, co-learners, and co-strugglers who have contributed to our program over the years. Last but certainly not least, we thank all the students who chose to spend their semester with us in the borderlands.

More reflections on Bisbee, Naco, Patagonia:
This trip was a peeling back of layers, an exercise in seeing through revisionist history. Conversations about mining, the Bisbee Deportation of 1917, Buffalo Soldiers, and learning about the indigenous history of the region, highlighted so many ways in which extractivism and borders and (settler-)colonialism and labor struggle and white supremacy could not possibly be unentangled. We talked about how preservation (of history, of places and land) is not apolitical and reflected on the many layers of ghost stories that exist.

Last week we went to Naco, Bisbee, and Patagonia!
We learned about Buffalo Soldiers at Camp Naco, the Bisbee deportation of 1917, and about environmental justice relating to mines in Patagonia. We deepened our knowledge through interacting with community and gained various perspectives which were thought-provoking and will enhance our studies more🌵
