The Premed Junior Year Decision 🗓️

Scores take about a month to come back, and schools review applications as they arrive rather than after a deadline. So testing in July means applying in August, into a smaller number of open seats. Pick the cycle you want first. That tells you the test date, and the test date tells you when prep starts.

Week one is not content review 🗓️

Taking a full length before you've studied feels pointless, which is why almost nobody does it. But without one, you review for three months and then have no idea whether your February score means the studying worked or you were already there. It also changes how you review, because you've seen how the exam actually asks about things.

Don't say this in your interview 🩺

"I want to help people and I've always liked science" is true for every applicant in the building, which is why it doesn't work. The answers that land name something specific that actually happened and what you did about it. Same pattern for why this school, for your strength, and for your weakness.

September through December if you applied 🗓️

September is for building your stories and researching each school's mission. October is for mock interviews out loud, with feedback. November is for update letters, but only if you actually have news. December is when a letter of intent to one top choice school matters. Most of this fails by being done too late, not too poorly.

Five concepts that show up in more MCAT passages than anything else 🧬

Why ions move, how amino acids drive folding, what Km and Vmax actually measure, how the three stages of metabolism connect, and how DNA becomes protein. Almost every Bio/Biochem passage is built on one of these, which is why reviewing them is worth more than another content chapter.

76 days until Brazil 🥋

I competed there three years ago and lost my first match. I haven't stopped training since, and in November I'm going back. The next ten weeks are conditioning, strength work, technique drills, and actually taking recovery seriously. Ten weeks sounds like a lot until you start counting the sessions.

One methyl group apart 🧬

Norepinephrine becomes epinephrine when an enzyme adds a single methyl group, which is why students blur them together. They share alpha-1 and beta-1. The whole difference is beta-2, and epinephrine has it. That is the bronchodilation, the glucose release, and the blood flow opening up in your muscles. Norepinephrine just clamps down.

I hate math but I want a 515 🧮

The MCAT doesn't give you a calculator, and it also doesn't need you to be precise. Twenty five percent is a quarter. Twelve point five is an eighth. Simplify the ratio before you cross multiply, split the exponents out, and round before you calculate. The answer choices are far enough apart that close is correct.
