This past summer, six undergraduate and Doctor of Pharmacy students embarked on a 12-day study abroad trip to Bangkok, Thailand. The international program offers students a closer look at Thailand’s pharmacy education system and healthcare system, while providing the opportunity to explore outside of the standard classroom setting, fostering personal and professional growth and familiarity with diverse cultures.

Michael Katz, PharmD, clinical professor emeritus and director of international programs, emphasizes the importance of cultural education and immersion for pharmacy students. "“International experiences can be life-changing, and I want my students to learn that while pharmacy and life is different in Thailand vs the US, we share many common professional and life experiences and attitudes.”

in the Community!

R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy recently hosted a health fair at The Forum at Tucson Assisted Living & Memory Care, where pharmacy student volunteers provided free health screenings and patient education to members of the community. Students evaluated over 19 patients with the help of preceptors, offering breathing assessments, as well as cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, and osteoporosis screenings. Health Fair participants also received education on over-the-counter medication safety, heart health, immunizations, and depression awareness.

The event was a great success and provided our PharmD students with an opportunity to reinforce the screening and patient-care skills they have learned in the classroom while making a meaningful impact in the community.

This summer marked the 20th anniversary of the University of Arizona BIO5 Institute's KEYS Research Internship. For twenty years, high school students across Arizona have been given the opportunity to partner with faculty and researchers from the University of Arizona to tackle some of today’s biggest scientific questions and projects.

The R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy had six faculty members participate in 2026, mentoring seven students as they built skills in lab techniques, data science, and science communication, expanding their experience and knowledge of laboratory settings and the scientific process while cultivating their interest in STEM fields.

“I’ve found being a KEYS mentor rewarding for allowing the opportunity to engage students at a pivotal stage before they enter university and to meet some of the brightest young minds right here in Arizona,” shared faculty mentor Jacob Schwartz, PhD.

Serving Rural Communities with Purpose: A Conversation with Youssef Roman

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) interviewed Youssef Roman, PharmD, associate professor, about rural, underserved and minority populations often missing from clinical and scientific research and how he created the Community Advocacy and Research Empowerment (CARE) Coalition to change that. Roman received an ORAU Innovation Partnership Grant while at Idaho State University to create the coalition, which brings together stakeholders committed to including rural, underserved and minority populations in research.

Elizabeth Hall-Lipsy, JD, MPH, associate professor of practice and associate dean of faculty and academic affairs at the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, has been selected for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Academic Leadership Fellows Program.

One of just 36 faculty members chosen nationwide, Hall-Lipsy will spend the coming year developing leadership skills, building a national network of academic pharmacy colleagues, and exploring the principles and practices of effective academic leadership.

Her selection reflects more than a decade of leadership at the College, where she has helped advance rural health education, health disparities initiatives, PharmD Forward programs, curriculum and assessment, and accreditation efforts. Her sustained contributions have helped shape educational programs and prepare future pharmacists to address the needs of diverse communities.

The organization accomplishes its mission by sharing information and providing opportunities for its members to deepen their understanding of pharmacy careers and the University of Arizona R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, in particular.

From trainee to independent scientist, Dominique Farrera, PhD, is building a research career focused on how metabolic dysfunction–associated steatohepatitis (MASH) can alter drug disposition and therapeutic outcomes.

A 2025 graduate of the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, Farrera’s work examines how MASH-induced changes in drug transporters affect medications including valsartan and adefovir. Her recent research highlights how altered renal drug handling in patients with MASH could influence drug exposure, toxicity, and ultimately patient safety.

Farrera credits her mentor, Nathan Cherrington, PhD, and a collaborative lab environment with helping her develop the independence and critical thinking needed to lead research. Her work has taken her from molecular mechanisms to animal studies and clinical research, with conference presentations providing opportunities to exchange ideas and build collaborations.

Looking ahead, Farrera sees the convergence of AI and multi-omics as a powerful force in drug discovery, disease research, and personalized medicine. As she continues her postdoctoral training, her goal is to bring her expertise in pharmacology, toxicology, and translational research to the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry, where she can help advance research that directly improves patient care.

Her advice to emerging researchers is straightforward: be curious, ask questions, stay adaptable, and don’t be discouraged when things don’t work the first time.

Alexis Cruickshank-Taylor’s path in science began with a summer in the University of Arizona’s KEYS Research Internship.

That 2018 experience sparked her interest in biochemistry and set her on a path to doctoral research in liver disease. Today, she’s co-authored four scientific publications and has returned to KEYS as a scientific mentor.

Eight years later, Alexis is helping another young researcher discover what she first discovered herself: there’s a place for her in science.

As KEYS celebrates 20 years, her story is a powerful example of how one opportunity can shape a scientist’s future, and how that impact can come full circle.
