Peñas have their roots in Chilean politics and culture, where they became popular venues for the music of the Nueva Canción movement (popularized during the the Unidad Popular Government of Salvador Allende). Peñas became model incubation spaces for social justice and grassroots culture all over Latin America.

We call ourselves a "Penya" because we are a Tucson Twist - celebrating our unique roots in a desert pueblo in Aztlán.
