To the music education community:

I would like to issue an official statement on the current state of music publishing and distribution. The way music publishing currently works revolves around an outdated, Eurocentric model of understanding, values, and terminology.

The reality of this industry is that most distributors prey upon publishers, who in turn prey upon composers. The end result? Educators are hit hard with aggressive marketing to purchase music they will never use, that doesn't fit the diverse needs of their classrooms, and is usually just a reincarnation of old works. This is unacceptable. It follows a toxic trend of continuing to inject the idea of Western colonialism and Western art music as the "highest" art form, a concept that simply does not resonate with many communities, especially our youth.

I am writing this today to say that while I deeply appreciate those of you who have purchased my music on these major sites, as much as 85% of those funds go directly to distributors who do no actual work. They do not promote, they do not edit, and they do not network with you. They don't listen, they don't adjust, they just profit. If you don't believe me, try returning an incorrectly distributed item to them and see how much they actually care about educators.

As much as the small fraction of publishing royalties helps me, it provides significantly more financial power to millionaire distributors who only pretend to care about this community.

Because of this, I have a request: Please, do not purchase my music from these companies. JWPEPPER, or ALFRED MUSIC, or any major distributor.

The only reason my work is on those platforms is so that educators who don't know my work can discover it. If you find something of mine that you want to play, just ask me for it. I will give it to you for free.

Please, save your budgets for instruments, focus on your students, and if you need something, just ask. Don't suffer through a broken system. We are not in this alone.

I just finished up a new producer logo, I wanted this to be inspired by the monkey in my Publishing Company logo, but distinct and more mature as my popular music needs its own identity outside of my children’s books and music.

I recently had the to compose the soundtrack for When The World Went Quiet, 🧟it was an insane marathon experience where we did the whole film in 4 days, while I also conducted two performances, and premiered another film. But it ended up a thrilling soundtrack. No, I didn’t sleep that entire weekend if you were wondering 🤪 This was my first time doing an entire soundtrack by designing everything from scratch, with much of the source being me playing the cello.
