We don't have to give time outs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don't have to leave babies to cry themselves to sleep.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don't have to think up random "consequences" to manipulate behaviour.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don't have to count to three.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don't have to threaten or reward or punish.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don't have to repeat the patterns of the past.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don't have to hurt our kids to grow them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mother nature will grow our children, our job is to walk alongside them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our job is to grow ourselves up. To heal our own hurts. To acknowledge our unmet childhood needs. To expand our emotional intelligence. To elevate our consciousness. To deepen our awareness. To become expert listeners, kickass playmates, and silly joke tellers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our job is to have fun. To evolve. To learn. To trust. To connect. To change the game. To break the "rules". To hold our families sacred.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don't have to hurt them to grow them into good humans. Acceptance is always the need. Kindness is always the answer. Love is always the way.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Please share this message far and wide as we normalize compassion and kindness. 💕

How are you going to spend that time?

I've read a lot of parenting books. I've taught a lot of different strategies in my parenting classes. There has yet to be a single book or philosophy that has blown me away like this one. If you have school-age and older kids, I highly recommend getting ahold of this book in traditional or audio form (I listened to it while building my Ikea furniture 😉). It will lighten your mental load tremendously as a parent and empower your kids to be their best selves. After reading this book, I shared my new understanding with my 16 year old and he was so proud of me. My once struggling student who couldn't care less about his grades is now holding his own in school, while still maintaining a well-balanced life outside of school.
This book was a game-changer.
The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives
“Instead of trusting kids with choices . . . many parents insist on micromanaging everything from homework to friendships. For these parents, Stixrud and Johnson have a simple message: Stop.” —NPR“This humane, thoughtful book turns the latest brain science into valuab...

What I love most about this list is that it is parent-empowering. These are all valid needs of a child and when we seek to meet needs versus just try to stop behavior, we have way more tools at our disposal. For example, when I see my kid rebelling, rather than meeting them with a power struggle, I can find other ways to help them feel more powerful and competent at other times, to minimize their need to rebel.
