Terp 4U Interpreting Services

I have been tutoring for the last few years and have also gotten requests to teach ASL from new learners. My background in Deaf culture has dictated to me that this is not acceptable to most in the Deaf community because, from their perspective, this should be reserved to native signers (Deaf or C/SODA). However, many students I have tutored who have taken ASL courses taught by Deaf teachers have complained to me that they are not doing well in their course because they don't understand their teacher. So, for this reason I have concluded that the best person to teach a hearing person ASL is a person who is hearing and fluent in English.

Here's my touchstone - if you were to ask a Deaf person, "who's the best person to teach their Deaf child English"? I would venture to guess their answer would be - a Deaf teacher. Why? Because they are fluent in ASL. Right? Wrong?

So I've been thinking a lot about the fact that Deaf and HoH students who have difficulty with specific academic content are at a loss because Teachers of the Deaf don't always have enough time to tutor individual students and many interpreters don't have this as part of their job description or aren't paid to stay after school to fill that role. So paying to have an additional person to provide these services is left to the parents. A question comes to mind as to whether parents even know that they can request/be reimbursed for such services and whether this could be a function of Terp4U.

Older and wiser

With the COVID-19 Pandemic still raging, and the knowledge that many of the Deaf students in K-12 settings have parents that do not sign, I am wondering how many Deaf students who are learning online would benefit from tutoring services offered to them by an interpreter via IM video-chat on Facebook. This would require that the teacher provide his/her lesson plans and be in communication with the interpreter serving in that capacity on a daily basis.

In my 20 years of experience as an Educational Interpreter, I have learned the many challenges interpreters in this setting face. All too often, there is no one to advocate for them and as a result, school administrators and/or instructors take advantage of their isolation, causing them to violate their role or experience physical and/or emotional trauma.

So, it is a goal to have this business focus on providing quality interpreters for the education setting; whether they be substitute educational sign language interpreters or an agency that hires solely educational interpreters to be placed in local school districts. In addition, offering to come into the district to offer in-service trainings or evaluation of their staff interpreters where no other person on staff is qualified to do so could also be a service offered by this agency.
