Poultry Protein & Fat Council

Poultry Protein & Fat Council The Poultry Protein & Fat Council was formed by the poultry rendering industry to provide assistance and research. www.poultryrenderers.com

The Poultry Protein & Fat Council grew out of leadership action by the poultry rendering industry. The initial group convened as the By-Products Committee to draft recommendations to the Southeastern Poultry & Egg Association board of directors (now U.S. Poultry & Egg Association). Nineteen representatives of poultry rendering companies met in Atlanta, Ga., on Nov. 14, 1988, to evaluate the existi

ng production and marketing of byproducts and to review research results from cattle feeding. They also discussed other needs of the rendering industry. The highlight of that meeting was an "eye-opening" study on feather meal for beef cattle, with data showing protein value twice that of soybean meal. The implication was that feather meal would be equally as valuable for dairy cattle. The investment in this research has had a significant impact on the market. Whereas feathermeal traded at a discount, on an equal protein basis, to soybean meal, it now trades at a premium due to its superior nutritional value. The renderers concluded that new market potentials should be developed and that feeding the products to poultry may not be the most profitable market. The Poultry Protein & Fat Council was formed to guide the association in providing needed assistance. Renderers agreed that research was an urgent and vital need, and have requested over $1.5 million in subsequent years on numerous topics.

“The rendering industry is responsible for recycling nearly 50% of the animal. Without rendering, this significant amount of material would go to waste,” commented Nancy Foster, president and CEO of the North American Renderers Association (NARA) and Fats and Proteins Research Foundation, during her presentation at the virtual International Rendering Symposium, held online in conjunction with the 2021 International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) Marketplace Week.

Two years ago, a conversation began on oxidation and its challenges. Thanks to support from the Tyson Foods Inc. Ingredient Solutions team, along with industry engagement and collaborators who have donated time and resources to numerous projects, progress is being made on solving oxidation challenges in rendered products.

In the April 2020 issue of Render Magazine, an article was released addressing the challenges of understanding product degradation, antioxidants, and laboratory methods as they relate to peroxide values of rendered material. Read the full article here:

The health and safety of all IPPE participants is paramount. After thoughtful and thorough consideration, show management for IPPE has made the difficult decision to not hold the in-person component of IPPE 2021 in Atlanta, scheduled for Jan. 26-28.

International Rendering Symposium to Examine Industry Challenges and Opportunities in the Rendering Industry at 2020 IPPE

The rendering industry is vital to the sustainability of animal agriculture. Every year, renderers safely convert more than 50 billion pounds of inedible animal products such as fat, bone and used cooking oil into everyday products, making rendering a highly sustainable practice and a key player in the reduction of food waste. The successes of this industry and the challenges facing it will be discussed at the 2020 International Rendering Symposium, held in conjunction with the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta.
