One of the highlights of our summer is the Teen Multi Adventure Trip and this year's trip was awesome. The goal of this trip is to give our campers the opportunity to try a variety of outdoor activities and experiences that can be found in the Appalachian Mountains. We spent this year's camp exploring the incredible places in and around Lake Fontana. Our campsite for the week was on the Southeastern part of the lake and gave us great access for canoeing and hiking. To get a better understanding of the 29-mile long lake and it's history we traveled to the dam on the northwestern edge. We took some time to take in the huge dam (480 feet!) and it's construction. From there we used pontoon boats to access unique valleys and historical areas surrounding the lake. Finding jumping rocks was for sure a favorite activity! In addition to our lake adventures, we also went white water rafting and hiked along the Appalachian trail to a fire tower with expansive views of the area. It was definitely a week full of adventures.

Let's talk Fall 2026 - let's meet Mattie! She is the Program Director and Lead Educator at The Adventure School.

As Mike’s daughter, Mattie’s early life was filled with adventure. Most of her childhood and teen years were spent outdoors in rivers and on rocks. She built on this foundation later in college, earning a B.A. in Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education from Brevard College in 2010 and later an M.A. in Education focused on Experiential Education from Prescott College. She has held her Wilderness First Responder certification since 2009. Her professional career has included leading backpacking, rock climbing, and paddling trips in the southeast and pacific northwest. She has been an educator in both outdoor programs and traditional schools for the past 17 years. She is passionate about the process of learning and cultivating curiosity, self-efficacy, and a sense of community.

We love our CITs! Counselor-In-Training week is always a such a great mix of fun and training for our Summer CITs. This year's group of CITs really jumped right in and took on the added challenge of moving from the camper mindset and developing their counselor awareness and leadership skills. The CIT camp included activities from leading games and learning how to support younger campers to practicing water rescues and guiding rafts. We are so grateful for the joyful and kind leadership these CITs have added to our Wild Weeks this year!
