About 20 minutes into class last week, this student stopped in the middle of the story and said, "I forgot at the beginning of class there was something I really wanted to tell you."

I'm completely serious when I say that I enjoy these random interruptions because it's almost always something completely out of left field.

"Of course! What is it?" I responded enthusiastically.

"I lost a tooth yesterday but the tooth fairy didn't come last night. It's ok though, my mom told me how sometimes the tooth fairy is super busy and gets delayed," they explained to me.

"Oh man, I hate when that happens! Hopefully, the tooth fairy will come soon!" I said with the biggest smile.

"Yeah, my mom thinks the tooth fairy will be able to make it tonight," they said nonchalantly.

I value moments like this because it gives the students a chance to share whatever is on their minds. It doesn't matter if I think it's important or not, because it's important to them.

Happy International Children's Day!

This holiday is celebrated annually on June 1 in different parts of the world as an initiative for children's well-being and rights.

I believe there's so much truth in the old saying, "It takes a village to raise a child," and I love getting to be a part of that village as a tutor.

As we start the new year, I'm more excited than ever to be able to tutor students and help them gain the foundational skills that will set them up for long-term success. To share my excitement, I'm offering all classes in January for $25 (a 50% discount from the regular price of $50 per hour)!

I am naturally an encouraging person, and even more so when it comes to the students that I work with. I know from firsthand experience how much is negatively impacted by having low self-esteem and being unreasonably hard on yourself (as I rewrote that sentence four times trying to word it *perfectly*).

Tutoring students one-on-one is such a privilege to me and something I enjoy so much because each student that I am with has my undivided attention and support.

I honestly don't mind when students interrupt me with a question because I want the focus to be solely on their development, not just academically, but life in general. I want to help each student feel comfortable and confident enough to ask a question about anything, whether it's about a word they just read or asking if I ever play Roblox.

Since graduating in 2014 with my degree in International Studies, my passion for supporting students has continued to grow. It started during five years of working with an afterschool program for elementary age students in my community, and continued as I have spent the past five years tutoring English through different online platforms.
