Congratulations to our indigenous friend Crystle Lightning on another series ❤️🪶
Paulina Alexis and Crystle Lightning are starring in the new mystery drama Anna Pigeon, premiering August 7th.
Based on Nevada Barr's bestselling novels, the 10-episode series follows park ranger Anna Pigeon as she investigates crimes hidden across America's national parks.
Paulina Alexis (Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation), known for Reservation Dogs and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, plays young park ranger Zoey Bear Child. In recent interviews, Alexis said stepping into a dramatic role pushed her outside her comfort zone after years of comedy, adding that she learned by working alongside series lead Tracy Spiridakos.
Crystle Lightning (Enoch Cree Nation), whose career spans film, television and music, plays park dispatcher Frieda Dierke, joining the ranger team in a recurring role.
Filmed in Alberta, the series uses Canadian landscapes to portray several of America's national parks. Anna Pigeon joins a growing slate of productions featuring Indigenous actors across leading and recurring roles in contemporary television.
Early reviews have highlighted Alexis as one of the series' standout newcomers, with RogerEbert.com praising her performance as Ranger Zoey.
Anna Pigeon premieres August 7 on USA Network in the United States and streams on Crave in Canada.

🍂 Long before autumn meant pie, the Wazhazhe (Osage) people were turning hard winter squash into something tender, glossy, and golden. Candied squash was a true Osage delicacy, cooked low and slow in a heavy kettle with butter and a little sweetness until every piece caught a warm maple glaze. 🎃
The old wisdom is in the hands, not the spoon. You shake the pot instead of stirring, so the soft squash glazes evenly and never breaks apart.
Serves 4 to 6 as a side. About 15 minutes active, 45 minutes total.
INGREDIENTS
2 lb winter squash (butternut or kabocha), peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
4 tbsp butter
1/3 cup maple sugar (or plain sugar)
1/4 cup water
1/4 tsp salt
2 tbsp maple syrup (optional, for extra glaze)
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Peel and seed the squash, then cut it into even 1-inch pieces so they cook at the same rate.
2. In a heavy pot over low heat, melt the butter, then stir in the maple sugar and water until it dissolves into a light syrup.
3. Add the squash and salt. Cover and cook gently over low heat, shaking the pot every few minutes rather than stirring.
4. Cook 30 to 40 minutes, until a fork slides in easily and the pieces are coated in glossy syrup. Add a splash of water if it dries out.
5. Uncover for the last 5 minutes to thicken the glaze, then serve warm.
Which winter squash would you reach for first in your kitchen?
🌿 Long before chia became a health-food trend, the Chumash of the California coast were carrying these tiny sage seeds on long journeys and stirring them into cool spring water for a drink that refreshed and sustained them. 💧 Soaked for just a few minutes, the seeds swell into a soft gel that makes plain water feel nourishing and alive.
Serves 2 | 5 minutes active, about 15 minutes total
INGREDIENTS
- 3 tbsp whole chia seeds
- 3 cups cold spring water
- 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 to 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- A small handful of crushed strawberries
- A pinch of sea salt
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Rinse the chia seeds, then tip them into a quart jar.
2. Pour in the cold water with a pinch of salt and stir for 30 seconds so the seeds do not clump.
3. Let it rest 10 to 15 minutes, stirring once more, until every seed is wrapped in a soft clear gel.
4. Stir in the honey and lemon juice, then fold in the crushed strawberries.
5. Serve well chilled over cool water or ice while it is fresh.
Which would you reach for first, bright lemon or sweet wild berry?
