Adventure Risk Challenge

A youth development nonprofit empowering high school students. Multi-week and multi-year programs incorporating academics and outdoor adventures.

Since 2004, ARC has supported youth in developing skills in literacy, leadership, and life. ARC is a youth development and outdoor education nonprofit dedicated to offering an immersive, multi-year program progression that increases access to four goal areas: literacy development, outdoor experiences, leadership development, and community building for rural, low-income, and English Learner high sc

hool students. We work with students who are often underrepresented in higher education and the outdoors. Through ARC’s programming, they build positive social and cooperative skills, strengthen academic performance, learn about environmental stewardship, and become more engaged members of their communities. Through immersive summer courses and academic-year engagement, ARC helps students amplify their voices, develop resilience, and cultivate a deep connection to their communities and the natural world. Youth graduate from our programs ready to lead, equipped with communication skills, confidence, environmental stewardship values, and strengthened pathways to postsecondary success.

Meet Selena, ARC alumni, and read about her story in our latest blog 🪻

Selena came to Adventure Risk Challenge as a high school student. This summer, she's back as a member of our seasonal staff, helping with our 2026 Summer Fundraising Campaign to fund our future programming for students, where they will have the same transformational experiences that shaped her.

A little rain couldn't dampen the spirit of our team this week!

Our immersive staff and students embarked on their second expedition, embracing the challenge with resilience, positivity, and genuine excitement. Moments like these are a powerful reminder of what's possible when curiosity meets determination and every step forward is part of a bigger journey of growth and self-discovery.

Day 16 complete. Proud of this team and excited for what's next. 🙌

Un poco de lluvia no logró opacar el espíritu de nuestro equipo esta semana.

Nuestro personal y estudiantes del programa inmersivo iniciaron su segunda expedición, enfrentando el desafío con resiliencia, actitud positiva y genuino entusiasmo. Momentos así nos recuerdan el poder de la curiosidad combinada con la determinación y cada paso adelante forma parte de un viaje más grande de crecimiento y autodescubrimiento.

Our Stepping Stone B students arrived this week and already on Day 3 of their expedition! Students came into basecamp and got to spend a very special evening celebrating summer instructor lead Melany's birthday with staff and Immersive course students. What a joy to kick off their 11-day adventure playing Shrek-themed games! Here's to our second stepping stone course! 💚

Nuestros estudiantes de Stepping Stone B llegaron esta semana, y nos emociona compartir que ya están en el Día 3 de su expedición! Los estudiantes llegaron al campamento base y pudieron disfrutar de una noche muy especial celebrando el cumpleaños de Melany, líder de instructores de verano, junto al personal y los estudiantes del curso Immersive. ¡Qué alegría comenzar su aventura de 11 días jugando juegos temáticos de Shrek!

Meet the coolest summer instructors that make ARC possible!

Our summer staff are the heart, soul, and steady presence of everything that happens on the trail, at basecamp, and in the classroom. They teach science, writing, and English curriculum. They lead students through backcountry expeditions and cook meals after long hiking days. They show up with patience and humor at mile 5 when everyone is tired, and they celebrate every breakthrough!

They don't just guide students through the Sierras. They model what it looks like to learn, to lead, and to grow. We are so grateful for this team. 🙌

Nuestro equipo de verano es el corazón, el alma y la presencia constante en todo lo que sucede en la ruta, en el campamento base y en el aula. Imparten clases de ciencias, escritura e inglés. Guían a los estudiantes en expediciones por zonas agrestes y preparan las comidas tras largas jornadas de senderismo. Aportan paciencia y buen humor en la milla 8, cuando todos están cansados, y celebran cada gran avance!

For 22 years, we've watched students arrive uncertain and leave transformed into more confident, more connected, and more ready to lead.
