Using the Unwanted

Have you ever felt like you have no purpose in life, especially as it pertains to God’s kingdom? Maybe you feel like you’ve sinned too much for God to use you? I used to think this way. But consider this about some of the people in the hereditary line of Jesus:

Judah – helped sell Joseph into slavery and later slept with Tamar
Rahab – Was a pr******te in Jericho
David – Committed adultery with Bathsheba and arranged to have Uriah killed
Solomon – Had many foreign wives that turned him away from God to false Gods
Rehoboam – Was mean to his subjects, which contributed to the division of the kingdom
Ahaz – Practiced idolatry and even burned his son as an offering

I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. The point is, God takes the unusable and make them usable. He did it with me and he can do it with you. If he can use all these sinners to bring Christ to us, He can certainly use you! You have value to Him and He wants all of us to work for the better good of the kingdom.

What does this entail? First, loving Him with all your heart, soul, and mind, and loving others as yourself. Second, witnessing to people in this lost world. Helping them realize that they need Jesus in their lives. Third, being kind to people no matter the circumstances so they see God’s love shining through you. Fourth, forgiving others as God forgave you. I’m sure you can think of more! Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit as a protector and a guide so that the world cannot take our salvation form us. He can and does work in us and through us to bring God to the world.

We pray: Dear Father, please send the Holy Spirit to work in me so that the world will come to know Your Son, our Savior, Jesus. Amen.

Faith, Rejection, Mystery

Ever wonder why some people are believers and some aren’t? Here’s a breakdown of three thoughts on belief:

Calvinists teach that people are believers because God elected them, but just some and not others. They believe that salvation is certain for those chosen. Those not elected will perish in Hell.

Arminians teach that people are believers because they freely choose to accept God’s grace – meaning they chose rightly. For them, salvation depends partly on human response. That’s decision theology, and we know it’s wrong. John 15:16 “You did not choose me, I chose you.”

We, as Lutherans, teach that God alone saves, humans alone reject. Jesus came for everyone, but some reject His invitation of salvation. Why is this? We do not claim to know the answer to this question. The tension is left as a divine mystery and the mystery is not resolved.

We do know that for those that believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, eternity in heaven is our final destination. For those that don’t, eternity will be a burning hot fire and anguish. John 5:24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” and from John 6:47 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.”

Sometimes when life is not going very well, our belief can waver and even diminish. These are the times when we need to pray to God to increase our faith and strengthen our belief instead of trying to fix our situation, remembering that He hears us, He loves us, and is always with us.

Let us pray: Dear Lord, when I start to wander, when my belief in You is not strong, be with me, guide, me, and increase my faith so I might spend eternity with You. Amen.
