**Your resume shouldn’t need an emergency update.**

September is International Update Your Resume Month — a good reminder that the best time to update your resume is *before* you suddenly need it.

But a strong resume is only part of a successful job search. You also need a strategy for what to do with it.

So for September, I’m bringing back an offer I ran earlier this year:

Purchase a resume package by September 30, and you’ll receive a free 50-minute job search coaching session — a $295 value.

As a Certified Career Services Coach (CCSC), I’ll use that time to focus on your specific situation, including:

• Which roles to target
• How to use LinkedIn more strategically
• How to reach recruiters and decision-makers
• How to search confidentially while you’re employed
• How to build a job search plan that goes beyond applying online

Resume + coaching. Your story on paper. Your strategy in motion.

Confession: I’m a procrastinator too.

I’ve rescheduled more dental appointments than I care to admit because work got busy and something else felt more urgent.

Sound familiar?

When you’re leading a team, running a business, managing family responsibilities—or just trying to keep up—your own career planning is easy to put off.

Until something changes.

A layoff. An acquisition. New leadership. A recruiter’s call. Or the perfect job opening that suddenly appears.

That’s often when people reach out to me and say, “How soon can we start?”

The problem is, good career work takes time. Your resume, LinkedIn profile, career story, and network are much easier to strengthen when you’re not working against an urgent deadline.

So here’s my advice:

Don’t wait for a career emergency to get ready.

Keep your resume current. Stay connected to your network. Know what you want next—and how you’ll tell that story.

Think of it as career insurance.

You may not need it today.

But you’ll be very glad you prepared before opportunity—or change—knocks on your door.

Are you career-ready if something changes next week?

Thinking about a career move this fall?

You may have heard about the *September Surge*—the period after Labor Day when hiring activity can pick up.

Will it happen exactly that way this year? No one can predict that with 100% accuracy.

But here’s what **is** predictable: a strong resume, LinkedIn profile, and personal brand take time to build.

If you’re considering a move, hoping to step into a bigger role, or simply want to be ready when the right opportunity appears, now is the time to prepare—not after the job posting lands in your feed.

My calendar often fills several weeks in advance.

Opportunities may come. Preparation starts now.

If a fall career move is on your mind, now is a good time to get on my schedule.

Breaking career news:

You are not a purple squirrel. 🐿️💜

You are also not a pink unicorn. 🦄🩷

Good. These belong in the toy aisle -- not a job description.

Yet some job descriptions seem to be hunting for both.

They want the candidate who has:

✨ Every required skill
✨ The exact industry background
✨ The exact technology
✨ The exact number of years
✨ Every leadership credential
✨ Zero learning curve

Possibly with magical powers.

Before you decide, “I’m not qualified,” ask a better question:

**What problem do they need this person to solve?**

Then ask:

Have I solved something similar?
Have I led at this level of complexity?
Can I show results that prove I’m ready?

Your job search is not about proving you’re mythical.

It’s about making your **real-world value** impossible to miss.

No glitter required. ✨

The resume that got you HERE won’t get you THERE.

Executives: You can update your resume perfectly—and still end up with the wrong resume for your next move.

You add your newest accomplishments. Refresh your responsibilities. Update the numbers.

But the result may still be:

• Built around the job you have, not the mandate you want next.

• Written in your company’s internal language, so an outside employer can’t immediately see the value.

• Focused on what you managed rather than the enterprise-level problems you’re ready to solve.

That matters when you’re moving from Director to VP—or VP to the C-suite.

At the next level, employers aren’t simply looking for evidence that you performed well in your current role.

They need to see a bigger leadership story:

How did you influence strategy?

What changed because of your decisions?

How did you improve profitability, growth, operations, talent, risk, or market position?

Where did your impact extend beyond your own function?

Before you “refresh” your resume, define the role you want next.

Then build the document backward from that destination.

Your resume shouldn’t just prove where you’ve been.

It should make the case for where you’re ready to go.

In a sea of AI blandness, a human resume wins.

Every. Time.

As recruiters are flooded with soulless, generic applications, the pendulum is swinging hard back toward authenticity. A resume that feels like it was written by a real person with unique experiences is now a massive competitive advantage.

Why the "Human" Resume is Winning

➡️ AI is raising the floor but lowering the ceiling. It helps bad resumes become mediocre, but it often makes great resumes sound average.

➡️ The "Bot Voice" is Obvious and Boring: Recruiters can now spot AI-generated text from a mile away. It's characterized by sterile grammar, and an over-reliance on buzzwords like "synergize" and "results-driven". Reading hundreds of these is mind-numbing, and they all blur together.

➡️ AI Struggles with Context and Nuance: An AI can list your tasks, but it can't explain the challenge you faced, the creative solution you devised, or the impact it had on your team. It misses the "so what?" factor that actually sells your experience.

➡️ Generic = Lazy in a Recruiter's Eyes: Submitting a clearly copy-pasted AI response signals a lack of effort and genuine interest in the specific role. A tailored, thoughtful resume shows you care.

➡️ Trust is a Major Issue: Hiring managers are becoming skeptical of bold claims in AI resumes. If every bullet point sounds like a generated platitude, they begin to doubt the authenticity of your actual skills and experience.

The bottom line: The most valuable currency in hiring right now is authenticity.

Let the bots handle research and keyword matching, but get professional help with the storytelling, strategy, and personality. That is how you win.

**Of Mice and Men**

Ever wonder why you keep clicking the Easy Button—even when it rarely pays off?

Application blasters and the Easy Apply button give you something you desperately need: the feeling that progress is one click away. The problem? It doesn't work.

Psychologist Abram Amsel studied what happens when mice expect a reward—but don’t receive it.

Instead of immediately giving up, they intensified their behavior. They wanted that tasty pellet, so they clicked more frantically.

Amsel called this **frustrative non-reward**.

Sound familiar?

Click “Easy Apply.”
Hear nothing.
Click it again.
Still nothing.
Submit 100 more applications with an AI blaster.
Crickets

This isn’t laziness or poor judgment. It’s human nature.

When a job search feels uncertain and largely outside our control, pressing a button feels productive. It provides a small sense of action—and the possibility that *this* application could finally produce the reward.

But activity isn’t always progress.

A smaller number of targeted applications—supported by a clear value proposition, a tailored resume, strategic networking, and thoughtful follow-up—can make your effort more purposeful.

You don’t need to press the lever faster.

You need a better job-search plan.

I help jobseekers identify the right targets, communicate their value, and build a strategy that goes far beyond clicking “Easy Apply.”

One of the biggest LinkedIn myths? “My employer will think I’m looking.”

Here’s the truth: Simply having a LinkedIn profile does NOT mean you’re job searching.

These days, LinkedIn is part of your professional presence. It helps people:
• be found
• build credibility
• stay visible in their field
• connect with peers, recruiters, clients, and industry contacts

In many cases, employers *expect* professionals to have a polished online presence. It reflects well on both you and the organization.

A LinkedIn profile is not a resignation letter.

It’s a modern career tool.

The key is to use it thoughtfully:
• keep your profile professional
• understand your privacy settings
• engage in ways that reflect your brand

If you’ve been avoiding LinkedIn because you think “it will look suspicious,” it may be time to rethink that.

Being invisible is usually the bigger risk.

Graduation season is here. 🎓

And new grads are stepping into a tough job market. That means their resume needs to do more than list education, skills, and a few bullet points.

It needs to tell a clearly human story.

I’ve created 4 TORI award-winning new graduate resumes, and what makes them stand out isn’t just the design.

It’s the storytelling.

New grads have more experience than they think.

They just need help translating it into a resume that shows confidence, readiness, and potential.

Because a strong new grad resume shouldn’t sound like it could belong to anyone.

It should sound like them.

Need help with a new grad resume? DM me or email [email protected].

Show of hands.✋️

Anyone else attending lots of graduation parties this month? 👩‍🎓

It’s such an exciting season — caps, gowns, proud families, big dreams.

And then comes the real-world question:

“How do I actually get hired?”

New grads are entering a tough job market, and they need standout resumes more than ever.

But what makes a resume stand out in the AI age?

A clearly human resume.

I’ve had the honor of creating 4 TORI award-winning new graduate resumes, and while the design may catch your eye, the real strength is the storytelling.

Each resume is built around that student’s unique experience: projects, internships, campus activities, leadership, volunteer work, part-time jobs, research, presentations, and more.

Because here’s the myth I’d love to retire:

“New grads don’t have accomplishments.”

They do.

They just don’t always know how to see them yet.

A strong resume writer asks the right questions and turns “just a class project” or “just a part-time job” into evidence of initiative, communication, problem-solving, leadership, and follow-through.

Your new grad doesn’t need a resume that sounds like everyone else’s.

They need a career-launching story that sounds like them.
