Thanks to support from TMS teachers, our middle school Life Skills class brought their ocean studies over the last few years to a thrilling conclusion with a visit to the beach in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, this past June!
Over the past several years, students have learned so much about the ocean, studying marine life, ocean-related careers, and more. This trip, funded by the B's Busy Bakers rolling bakery managed by the class (as well as an anonymous donation), was many students' first time seeing the ocean in person.
The class got to wade into the water, build sandcastles, collect seashells, and even picked up some litter on the beach. They also enjoyed games, pizza and ice cream on the boardwalk.

TBT: 1945-1947
In the late 40's, Troy High's basketball team was a force to be reckoned with in the Capital Region, losing only one game between the 45-46 and 46-47 seasons and winning back-to-back Section 2 Championships under legendary coach Ed Picken, long before the THS Athletic Hall of Fame carried his name.
Take a look back in history with these pages from the 1946 and 1947 editions of the Dardanian!

๐๐ Today is Moon Day! Youโll probably see a lot of astronaut photos today, but we want to celebrate the ultimate STEM projectโand the unsung hero with deep Troy roots who made it happen!
In 1967, the Apollo space program suffered a devastating setback when Apollo 1 caught fire during a launch rehearsal, killing all three crew members and destroying the command module. The tragedy threatened to end the race to the moon. NASA needed a brilliant problem-solver, so they turned to George M. Low.
Low, an Austrian immigrant who studied engineering here in Troy and married a Troy native, took over the Apollo spacecraft program as part of an illustrious career at NASA. His strategy? He led a team that took the spacecraft command module completely apartโall TWO MILLION parts of it!โand painstakingly redesigned it to ensure the astronauts would be safe.
Because of his leadership, Apollo 11 successfully touched down on the lunar surface 57 years ago today.
Interestingly, he also led the Low Committee in 1960, which produced the study that played a major role in President John F. Kennedy's decision to set a goal of landing humans on the Moon by the end of the 1960s. Low went on to become NASA Deputy Administrator and, after his retirement, returned to the Collar City, where he served as president of RPI until his death in 1984. His son David became an astronaut in 1985 and flew on three space shuttle missions.
In 1985, the White House announced Low had been posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Today is World Emoji Day! Have you ever wondered how a simple text message became a global language? ๐๐
The modern emoji actually started in Japan in 1999, when designer Shigetaka Kurita created a set of nearly 200 small pixel icons for mobile phones. By 2010, they were standardized globallyโand today, they're everywhere!
But did you know Troy plays a massive role in how we understand them? ๐๏ธ
Right here in the Collar City, groundbreaking cognitive science research at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has been changing the game. RPI researcher Benjamin Weissman proved that our brains don't just view emojis as lazy text shortcuts. Instead, we process them using the exact same neural pathways we use for spoken grammar and physical body language! ๐ง ๐ก
Want to go WAY back? We wouldn't even have a place to type them without RPI alum Ray Tomlinson (โ63). He invented network email and chose the iconic "@" symbol, laying the digital foundation for all text-based communication that followed. ๐ง
So the next time you drop a ๐ซก or a ๐ in the chat, remember: itโs not just a silly icon. Thanks to some incredible history and research right in our own backyard, it's a complex, legitimate evolution of human language.
