Another big win for RPI Nuclear Engineering! ⚛️ RPI’s RENEW — Rensselaer-Excelsior Partnership for Nuclear Sustainability — has been awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Nuclear Reactor Safety Training and Workforce Development Program with a $2.38 million project. Led by Principal Investigator Prof. Wei Ji of RPI’s Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering (MANE), RENEW will bring together RPI, Excelsior University, NYSERDA, industry, and energy-sector partners to advance nuclear safety education, workforce development, and public engagement—leveraging technologies including AI, machine learning, and simulators while developing new credentials and hands-on learning opportunities for the next generation of nuclear professionals. Congratulations to Prof. Ji and the entire RENEW team on this exciting investment in the future of nuclear energy!

Big news for RPI and New York’s advanced nuclear future! ⚛️ RPI has been awarded $1.857 million from the New York Power Authority as part of Governor Kathy Hochul’s NextGen Nuclear New York initiative—an effort to build a skilled, in-state workforce while expanding reliable, emissions-free energy and creating new career pathways for New Yorkers.
Led by Principal Investigator Prof. Wei Ji of RPI’s Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering (MANE), RPI will partner with SUNY Westchester Community College and SUNY Onondaga Community College to develop training opportunities and 2+2 transfer pathways for careers across the advanced nuclear sector.
We are proud to bring RPI’s leadership in nuclear engineering and education to this statewide effort and help prepare the talent that will power New York’s energy future.

Governor Hochul announced that the New York Power Authority (NYPA) awarded $10 million in funding to support workforce development programs across the state designed to prepare New Yorkers for careers in the emerging nuclear energy industry.

Today we hosted 150 local students from 8 area schools (Troy, Averill Park, LaSalle, Emma Willard, Questar III Stem, Questar III EPICH, HVCC, and Redemption Christian Academy) for National Manufacturing Day. The students were able to tour a US Army Black Hawk helicopter, hear from RPI alum about the manufacturing industry, and tour RPI Engineering labs, and classrooms to see the engineering student experience. There are many to think, including Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello, Senator Jake Ashby, Ryan Patry '99 (Sikorsky), and many others!
