LCR3 K-5 families,

As we move into fall and closer to winter, bringing the possibility of inclement weather, the District would like to take the opportunity to provide you with information on our Alternative Method of Instruction (AMI) Plan.

What is Alternative Method of Instruction or AMI? The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) developed AMI as an option for schools to utilize for instruction when students could not be in-person for learning. For example, we may use AMI for inclement weather or COVID building closures.

In the case of AMI usage for inclement weather, teachers would be expected to make assignments available in our learning management system, Canvas, for students to complete at home. Therefore, since work would be completed at home, these instructional hours would still be counted toward the total hours required by the DESE for the school year.

As AMI does take some advanced planning (We all know the weather in Missouri is unpredictable!), most likely, we will not utilize AMI for all inclement weather days. However, when we receive a fairly accurate prediction of severe weather or it appears that a COVID closure may be necessary, we can prepare and send iPads, chargers, and any other necessary materials home with students.

In order to best prepare for the possibility of AMI, the District will hold a practice AMI event on the evening of October 13. All students will still attend for their regular school day on the 13th, but each elementary child, K-5, will bring home their iPad and charger for the evening. If you indicated that you do not have wifi access at home and requested a District issued hotspot, this will also come home on the evening of the 13th. Your child’s teacher will have one simple and fun activity that children will need to complete in Canvas. This will NOT be taken for a grade but is intended to help familiarize students and parents with logging in to their iPad and Canvas, connecting to wifi, and completing and submitting an assignment in Canvas.

The following day, all District issued devices and chargers will be expected to return to school with your child along with any questions or concerns you may have about the process. Thank you for your continued partnership. We look forward to working with you and your child on our AMI practice!
