We had a customer that needed mullein - and we are sold out of our regular mullein. We processed some young first year leaves - the "heart" of the mullein.

For our regular mullein customers, this is a bit different than what you are accustomed to. There is quite a bit more fuzz on the first year leaves - making them more silver in appearance. They are just as good - some say better - than green leaves - but are not harvested in quantity - only when the whole young plant is taken for roots.
That said - there are only three pouches left until the plants are big enough to harvest outer leaves again in 2025! If your order by noon PST tomorrow - they will go out with tomorrow's shipments.

Mullein Flower is very popular in our Etsy shop. Not only is it popular with us - it is popular with grasshoppers! (Volume up - you can hear him chewing!!!...and the birds, and a frog!) They only bloom a few at a time around midday. I've tried negotiating - the ones up high for grasshoppers - the ones down low for me - but they are not keen to share. It is always a race to see who can get them first!

Where we are, the second year plants are finished and dying. At this time of year, they are simply making seeds for the next generation of mullein. It is important not to take plants or parts of plants that are not useful, as they have purpose in the larger ecosystem. Many insects benefit from mullein, even in its dying state.
The leaves, once yellowing and insect damaged are no longer useful, nor is the root on a second year plant. The flowers are not beneficial once they are brown. There will be no more mullein harvest until later in the fall when the first year plants have gained size.

Look who we found snuggled up in a mullein leaf last night...

When you harvest mullein, only take what you need, and harvest a little bit from several plants, rather than destroying a plant. Mullein is a host and home to many insects - including our precious pollinators. 🐝🌱💚

If you are seeing these guys on your mullein, and you don't have an abundance of mullein to share, you might want to take action. This is an introduced control agent - the caterpillar of the mullein moth. They are responsible for the tar-like spots... You won't find a cocoon - they pupate underground - which has taken up to five years in captivity! Unlike the mullein weevil, these guys can decimate a plant quickly!

Some people have asked if there is a way to "smoke" mullein without smoking it. Since mullein doesn't stay lit well, it can be bundled with other herbs to light; we prefer a resin igniter. If you don't have access to clean resin, it is also available through Canyon Botanics.

This patch on our property is called Jurassic Park because of the size of all of the vegetation.
The lower leaves of the mullein and Scotch Thistle are longer than my arms!!! The second year mullein is still in its rapid growth phase - the flower stalk is not yet vertical. It will be a monster...doubt I'll be able to reach flowers on these!
