We are RPI's student-run Formula SAE team. Every year we push the limits of automotive engineering a There they earned a respectable 34th place.

The RPI Formula SAE team is a group of approximately twenty students with a passion for designing, building and racing Formula SAE series race cars. The team first attended competition at Michigan International Speedway in 1994. Since then, the team has grown substantially and currently ranks 33rd overall in the United States; 130th in the world. Formula SAE competition, run by the preeminent Society of Automotive Engineers, puts students in real-life design scenarios, offers life lessons along the way, and provides engineering experience that cannot be taught in a classroom or with a textbook. Career preparation, lasting friendships and practical engineering experience are just the beginning of what it means to be part of RPI's Formula SAE team.

Meet the leads for RM30!

Cameron Quail is a Jr from Keene, NH. He is dual majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
Cam likes RM because it It gives him the opportunity to work on an exciting project and gain applicable job experience, all while spending time with our incredible close-knit team.

Cam's favorite gas station order is a granola bar and a sweet tea!

Alexander Ethier is a Jr from Raritan, NJ. He is studying Electrical Engineering. Alex likes RM because
he gets to work on electronics projects that work towards a super cool goal.

Alex's favorite gas station order is a chocolate milk and a cookie dough fit crunch

Abel Arellano is a Jr from El Paso, TX. Abel is studying Aerospace Engineering. Abel likes RM because He's always loved racing, and RM has a sense of community around a shared project where Everyone puts passion into their work for the car, which brings out some great qualities and enriches everyone together.

Nick is a Senior from Upton, MA. He is studying Mechanical Engineering. He likes RM because of the extra in depth engineering work he gets to do outside of class.

Yulin is a sophomore from Cheshire,CT. He is studying Mechanical Engineering. He likes RM of the community and friends and getting to build a racecar.

Yulin's go to gas station order is a mixed flavor slushy!

Emma is a Jr from Littleton,MA. Emma is studying Materials Engineering. Emma likes RM because of the hands on Engineering, getting to race the final project and being around people with the same interests and motivation to build a racecar.

Emma's go to gas station order is a peach edition redbull and nerds gummy clusters

Colby is a sophomore from Somerset County,NJ. Colby is studying Electrical Engineering. He likes RM because its a very fun engineering club.

Henry is a sophomore from Brookland, AR. Henry is studying Electrical Engineering. He likes RM because it is a place to build data acquisition and low voltage systems that have real challenge in a very hands on an practical way.

We have had an exciting first few weeks of school at Rensselaer Motorsport. It's been a blast welcoming the class of 2030 and getting back together as a team. As we continue the design and manufacturing of this year's car, RM30, there is still plenty of hard work and testing going on with RM29 as we prepare for The Toronto Shootout in October.

Today we had successful day of high-speed testing at Lebanon Valley Speedway
We are very greatful for the opportunity to work on some high speed electronic testing!
Looking forward to putting this data to use in preparation for Toronto Shootout in October!

2026 Michigan recap! 🏆🏎️

The team made huge strides this year with RM29, passing all technical inspections for the first time as an EV, competing in all dynamic events, and finishing endurance for the first time in 8 years! We came 21st overall and won 2nd place in efficiency!

Is it performative to post before passing rain tech? 🤔🌧️

Not only did we place fifth at Formula Hybrid + Electric last week, we also won the Scrutineer's award and Test Equity award for being the best prepared for both mechanical and electrical inspection! We were the first through all technical inspection, and completed rain tech on the first try. In addition to these awards, we won the IEEE Engineering the Future Award, highlighting our dedication to creating a robust vehicle and preparing extensively for the competition.

Formula Hybrid + Electric 2026 recap! 🏆⚡️

For the second time, Rensselaer Motorsport competed in the FH+E competition with a fully electric vehicle. The team competed in all dynamic events and placed fifth overall! We are extremely proud of this achievement and looking forward to racing in New Hampshire next year!
