Congressman Tonko congratulates Professor Abby Kinchy of RPI's STS Department for her new NSF grant! Dr. Kinchy says: “This project will make it possible for communities to investigate soil contamination in their own neighborhoods, understand pathways for exposure, and discover the social and political dimensions of soil pollution and cleanup. As a social scientist, I am proud to lead this multidisciplinary collaboration that involves the natural sciences, engineering, and the arts—as well as community partners in Troy, NY and northern Chile. I believe that collaborating across disciplines, with the public, and across international boundaries is essential if we are to address the urgent environmental challenges that we face today and in the future.”

“Jim Malazita, an assistant professor of science and technology studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, believes higher education has played a role. He thinks there’s something about how the STEM disciplines are taught — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — that discourages students from considering ethical questions as they learn the skills they need to work for big technology companies. But if colleges and universities are contributing to the problem, then they can also help fix it.“
