We had a blast at our 7th annual Civic Heroes Summer Camp! Swipe to see all the fun things we got to do while learning about our government and the community.

We had such a great group of kids this year that had the energy and excitement that it takes to make camp fun! We have no doubt that they will be great leaders in their communities, and will take what they learned and apply it to every day life. We miss them so much already!

A HUGE special thanks to:

Troy Police Department - Officer Baldwin and his K9, Smoke, did an awesome job at showing our campers what Smoke is trained to do! We are so appreciative of the Troy Police Department and what they do for the Troy community!

Clint Free - Mr. Clint is the Executive Director of Common Ground Troy. Common Ground is an after school program for 6th-8th grade young men and provides necessary resources for them to succeed. Clint is loved and appreciated by the Troy community for his hard work and devotion to provide an excellent learning space for these young men!

Troy Fire Department - Captain McMangle, Sergeant Turner, Firefighter Nobles, and Mr. Wingo came prepared to show off their skills. The Troy Fire Department is an incredible asset to our community, and did an amazing job at showing our campers the role they play in keeping our community safe.

Chauntina Whittle - Chauntina is the Program and Outreach Coordinator for the David Matthews Center and joined our camp for the week as a camp counselor. The kids loved hearing her speak on important community assets and how to best utilize resources in your community!

Troy University Photography - Aliza Chambers came on Thursday and Friday to take pictures of our activities planned on those days. Aliza is awesome at what she does and we are so grateful for her!

We are grateful for everyone who took time out of their work days to present to our kids and help them understand the value in true community and belonging. It takes a village to build a strong community, and these Civic Heroes are proof of that.

Congratulations to Mrs. Lauren Cochran on her new role as the Director of Special Projects for Troy City Schools! Although the Office of Civic Engagement will miss her so much, we are so excited to see the impact that she will have on our local schools. Everywhere Mrs. Lauren goes, impact follows. We are so grateful for Mrs. Lauren and everything that she’s done for Civic Engagement and the students in Troy.

Calling all future heroes!🦸  Civic Heroes Summer Camp is back at Troy University this July 13-17, 2026!

If you know a rising 4th–6th grader who loves helping others, solving problems, and having fun—this is the camp for them!
For just $50, campers get daily snacks, a t-shirt, and hands-on activities that teach how to make a difference in their community. This year’s camp will even feature a celebration honoring America’s 250th birthday! 🇺🇸

Today we celebrate three outstanding student leaders from the Office of Civic Engagement whose impact on campus and in our community will be felt for years to come.

✨ Jayden McQueen — After three years with Civic Engagement, Jayden leaves an incredible legacy of leadership and service. As a JOIP Intern, she lead the Civic Lab, Civic Tapestries, Coffee & Conversations, Civic Heroes Summer Camp, and Democracy Project while supporting every other initiative in our office. She regularly represented Civic Engagement at conferences, advocated for fellow students, and helped raise support for the Trojan Pantry alongside many other campus leadership roles.
🎓 B.S. in Political Science, minor in Leadership Development

✨ Timaya Brown — Timaya began as one of our most dedicated volunteers, serving more than 50 hours during the 2025-26 year across our food security programs before becoming student lead for Campus Kitchens Meal Prep & Delivery and Backpack for Kids this year.
🎓 B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies: Psychology, Nursing, and Health Sciences

✨ Janiah Anderson — As a Civic Engagement intern this semester, Janiah focused on student engagement and strengthening our resource hub to help students build connection, belonging, and support on campus.
🎓 B.S. in Human Services, minor in Applied Health Sciences
