Want more force, power, and speed?

Instead of cramming reps into fewer sets, spread the work out.

Lower reps. More sets. More high-quality outputs.

Most athletes spend the entire offseason trying to get stronger.

Then the season starts…

And they stop lifting.

That never made much sense to me.

Especially when you start paying attention to what the athletes who are getting recruited are actually doing.

All three are still lifting.

But here’s the important part:

They’re not all doing the same workout.

One went 4x3 on Heel Elevated Zercher Squats. We changed the variation to get the training effect we wanted while better fitting what she needed that day.

One was ready to push, so we went heavy: 5x2 Heel Elevated Squats.

One walked in feeling 75%.

Her planned 5x2 became 3x2, and we used velocity to monitor her output instead of guessing whether she had it that day.

Three Athletes.
Three Situations.
Three Different Prescriptions.
Three Solutions.

That’s what our 25% / 50% / 75% / 100% system is built for.

Because in-season training shouldn’t be about blindly following the program.

And it shouldn’t be about abandoning the weight room for three months either.

Some days we push.

Some days we pull volume.

Some days we change the movement.

Some days we monitor output more closely.

But we keep training.

There’s a reason you keep seeing high-level athletes in the weight room during their season.

The season changes the prescription.

It doesn’t change the commitment to getting better.

From racks next to each other all summer to opposite sides of the net.

These two spent the summer putting in the work together before heading back to two different college volleyball programs.

Then they sent us this picture after their game.

Pretty damn cool.

Sometimes you can tell it was fast.

And sometimes you let the laser confirm it. ⚡️

New PR for this girl today.

The fist bump was well earned. 👊

We let our athletes decide how much of the workout they do.

100%.
75%.
50%.
25%.

Sounds like a great way to let athletes take the easy way out.

It’s actually how we keep training hard in-season.

We write the sets, reps, loading and velocity targets.

They tell us where they’re at that day.

If an athlete chooses 50%, they do 50% of the prescribed volume.

If they’re at 25%, they do 25%.

And when they say 100%?

Full send.

Because I’m not interested in spending an entire season “maintaining.”

We’re still trying to get better.

The catch is that athletes have to be honest with themselves.

A high-minute player coming off a tournament probably shouldn’t train like the athlete who barely touched the court.

And the low-minute athlete doesn’t need their training cut just because everyone else is tired.

That makes no sense.

Early in the season, we see a lot of 100% days.

As matches and tournaments pile up, that naturally starts drifting toward 75%, 50% and occasionally 25%.

That’s the point.

Instead of guessing how much every athlete can handle, the training dose adapts to the athlete in front of us.

Push when we can push.

Pull back when we need to pull back.

And when it’s actually a recovery day?

Recover.

We tell them we don’t want to see them.

Because recovery is part of training too.

“You think you can do a 6”?”

She wasn’t sure.

I was.

So we added 6 inches to the box.

She jumped.
Nailed it.
High five.

Then immediately:

“I’m like Spider-Girl.” 😂🕷️

Funny enough, one of my D1 volleyball players said almost the exact same thing after a jump last year.

Apparently the feeling doesn’t change much from 3rd grade to Division I.

We spend a lot of time talking about strength, speed, power, sets, reps and progressions.

But sometimes coaching is simpler than that.

Give them a challenge just beyond what they think they can do.

Then give them the chance to prove themselves wrong.

Today it was 6 inches.

And apparently Spider-Girl was waiting on the other side.
